Shore joins the SOCOTEC Group

Shore are delighted to announce the news that we have been acquired by SOCOTEC UK Limited.

SOCOTEC UK is a leading Testing, Inspection and Certification Company in the UK and have now created the largest UK building control body, with its existing team being joined by those of Shore and Quadrant Building Control – the procurement also means that they have expanded their existing CDM and Health & Safety portfolio. We are excited about the future opportunities that this will bring to our employees and clients across the commercial and residential sectors.

Our existing clients will notice no operational interruption and our professional Building Control and CDM teams will continue to operate as usual - joining forces with SOCOTEC UK will enable us to demonstrate the capability and national consistency (required in today’s ever more demanding regulatory environment), invest in our teams and equipment, and importantly be in a strong position to attract, train and retain the best talent in the industry, with future plans to create a graduate training academy.

Shore is very excited about the future opportunities joining forces will bring and is very much looking forward to working with SOCOTEC UK & Quadrant to build a national service that is No.1 in the building control sector and a leader across CDM Health & Safety Sector.

A team from Shore was pleased to take part in the Superstructures Charity Golf Day on 15 July, raising money for TK - Talitha Koum, an Ipswich-based charity supporting vulnerable women.

Thanks to Superstructures for organising and hosting such a great event at the Fynn Valley Golf Club, and congratulations to the DLP Group who were winners on the day!

To celebrate Shore’s twenty year anniversary and to thank colleagues, friends and their families for their hard work and ongoing support we held a summer event at Fynn Valley Terrace near Ipswich. With a Caribbean theme, a steel band gave a tropical feel to the afternoon while the children had the run of the lawn with a bouncy castle and a variety of games. Flowing on into the evening with a Caribbean-themed barbecue and lively entertainment provided by Wully Bully, an amazing local covers band, it was all helped along by bright summer weather which gave the day that magical sparkle!

Kevin Savage, Managing Director said, "We had an amazing time and it was so good to see so many of our Shore team and their families enjoying themselves in a relaxed and informal setting. Our colleagues past and present, and the management group around me have contributed to our success over the last 20 years and I very much appreciate that we would not be where we are without them – it was a pleasure to see so many happy faces here today”.

Ryan Fitzgerald from our Southeast England Regional team has been looking at some important information in relation to the new technical changes to the Building Regulations.

With the up and coming changes to the Building Regulations 2010, the construction industry is readying itself for a substantial increase in the requirements relating to building thermal performance in new buildings.

With many projects already at design and planning stage, developers are correctly reducing risk and using the current transitional arrangements to allow buildings to be constructed in line with the current standards.

However there may be a slight sting in the tail for first fit outs…

While shell and core developments registered before the 15th June 2022 can be designed to Approved Document L2A 2016 there could be a conflict if the resulting fit out works is registered after the 15th June 2022.

In this instance, fit out works will need to comply with the new standards which could result in unplanned upgrades and additional costs due to the changes in the way buildings are powered.

Shore is recommending all our clients with proposed shell and core developments and future fit out work get in touch so that we can advise the best course of action.

Building Regulations are Changing

In a move towards a Future Buildings Standard, the UK Government has announced changes to the requirements of The Building Regulations 2010, including a mandatory 30% cut in carbon for all new homes and a 27% cut for other buildings, including offices and shops.

In order to keep our local customers informed of these changes, Shore held a seminar on 12th May at the JobServe Community Stadium. These new requirements are enforced by Building Control bodies, primarily using guidance found in the Approved Document (ADs). This seminar, delivered in partnership with mes building solutions, helped explain the ramifications of Approved Documents F, L, and O, which relate to energy efficiency standards, ventilation, and a new AD that will introduce requirements for the first time into the building regulations which control overheating within our buildings.

Kevin Savage, Managing Director at Shore, said, “These are important changes to the regulations and we were delighted to help highlight these to our clients. Our Building Control teams are available to discuss how these changes may impact on schemes that you are procuring and we would be pleased to hear from you and to help and support you with any queries you may have.”

Changes to Building Regulations come into play on 15th June 2022, however they are not applicable to any Building Control applications submitted prior to this date providing work has commenced on site before 15th June 2023. Should you have any queries regarding the changes or want to submit an application prior to 7th June please do not hesitate to contact us on 01206 230820 or email us at [email protected].

With everything going on in the world at the moment, we would like to reach out to you on behalf of Michael Kempster, who works in our team at Shore.

On 10th March, Michael and his partner, Katrina, postponed their winter beach holiday to embark on a journey across Europe to the Poland/Ukraine border in a VW Up! to provide help to those seeking refuge from the war.

After briefly venturing into Ukraine and attempting to help people cross into Poland, they have had to limit their efforts to distributing aid on the Polish side of the border as civilian and aid vehicles are coming under fire - it’s an incredibly difficult and dangerous situation.

In a world where it is often easy to make small symbolic gestures via social media, what Michael and Katrina are doing could really make a difference to people in desperate need. Whilst they’re not looking for any donations for their trip, they would like everyone to consider donating and supporting one of the many amazing fundraising efforts available in support of the humanitarian effort, or simply share this information about what they are undertaking.

In recognition of what Michael and Katrina are doing, Shore have pledged to make a donation matching the combined total contributed by all employees.

10/03/2022

Next up in our short series of conversations with some of our female employees to coincide with Women in Construction week is Kate O’Neil, Senior CDM H&S Consultant who joined us almost a year ago.

What was your route into working in the construction industry?
My father owned his own construction company, so I have grown up in this sector. I used to help him out when I was a teenager with paperwork and quotes etc. so my natural progression was into construction. I undertook my NEBOSH exams to initially help him out with Risk and Method Statements and company Health and Safety.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Knowing that you are keeping the project safe and imparting my knowledge and experiences to others. I find sharing experiences really helpful for clients, as it can put into context as to why the CDM regulations are there to help all parties concerned with the project - it helps that I am a people person as well!

Construction is generally regarded as a male-dominated industry. Were there any obstacles you had to overcome?
When I first started out in H&S/Construction there were generally not many women doing what I do - seeing a woman on site was quite a rare thing. I have experienced a few comments along the way and feel that I may have been questioned/asked more to prove myself. However, I do honestly believe that as the years have gone on I no longer experience any of this and I am given respect for the job I do.

What would your advice be to women who might be considering a career in construction?
Go for it, there is nothing to dislike about it! It’s interesting, it’s challenging, it’s rewarding, and most of all you meet some really interesting people along the way. I’ve made some great life-long friends, both male and female through my work whom I know I can turn to if I need advice or support. It’s a great sector to be in.
