Not all our gardens are complete renovations. In this townhouse garden in Ashby de la Zouch, our clients already had a compact and well-looked after garden. They wanted a cosy, covered outdoor kitchen and sitting space to replace an open paved corner and freestanding BBQ – they wanted something more permanent and private, that felt connected with the rest of the garden.

We designed a bespoke pergola with vertical slatting over a composite decked area to avoid a boggy corner of the garden. A gravel pathway with plank pavers through the planting beds was used to connect it to the rest of the garden. Some lawn remained and existing planting beds were slightly reshaped and edged to be square.

We selected ebony grey Millboard decking with a bespoke black painted timber pergola to match an existing arch feature on the other side of the garden, and to complement the existing cedar slatted fencing.

We designed the new planting to blend seamlessly with the existing shrubs so the garden felt cohesive. We added David Austin Roses ‘Tottering By’ and ‘Kew Gardens’, Astrantia, ferns and Libertia for the shaded dry areas under the trees, and Amelanchier for height.

During last weekend’s sunshine I visited a client garden we first planted two years ago, and it’s looking pretty special.

We’re sometimes asked why our initial planting looks a bit sparse (as you can see from our ‘just planted’ photos), compared to the show gardens you see at Chelsea.

The reason is you need to give your plants a chance to settle into their new space and grow. We will install a young plant spaced at its mature size, not its current size. A plant that’ll grow to be 1 metre wide goes in with a metre of space around it – even though it looks tiny and lonely when planted.

Chelsea gardens are built for a single moment in time. The designers cram in mature plants at full size because the garden needs to look impressive on one specific week in May.

If those gardens were left alone, rather than dismantled at the end of the show, the plants would stay cramped, competing for light, water and air. They’d soon become overgrown, and would not thrive.

So, if you want that Chelsea look at home, patience is required – but the wait is worth it.

June’s calendar garden find us in our home town of Ashby de la Zouch. This prestigious property was having some alterations and a new garage built, and we designed this scheme to modernise the garden areas. Still a work in progress, hence the 3D visuals.

A few weeks after our large plant installation in Coleorton we’re back to plant a few stragglers and to check up on how the planting looks – and it’s looking really good in the sunshine. ☀️ We’ll be back later next month for another checkup.

Phew! It’s a scorcher out there ☀️

With high temperatures forecast for the next week, your garden could do with a hand.

Plants cool themselves much like we do. We sweat, they transpire – and the hotter it gets, the more water they draw up through their roots to keep going.

Here are a few ways to see them through the heat:

Water early or late. First thing in the morning or in the evening, you lose far less to evaporation than you would in the midday sun.

Aim for the soil, not the leaves. Get the water down to the roots where it’s needed, and a layer of mulch will help the ground hold its moisture for longer.

Mind the thirsty ones. Pots, hanging baskets and anything planted this year want watering every day – twice if it’s hot and breezy.

Don’t worry about your lawn. Brown grass looks sorry for itself, but it bounces back the moment the rain returns. Save the water for the plants that need it.

We have a fuller watering guide over on the blog 👀 see the bio.

Stay cool this weekend, and look after those borders.

Here’s our final photo dump from last week’s garden installation near Kettering. It was a huge team effort, and we had to deal with some unforeseen hiccups, such as a diesel-contaminated planting bed and some buried concrete.

But the garden is now almost completed – just a few unavailable plants and some resin drive coverings to go.

Huge thanks to:
