Aspire Landscape Management Improving the presentation of the borough.

In October 2016, Ashford Borough Council brought the responsibility for grounds maintenance across the borough back in-house. This initiative is a key part of delivering the adopted Land Management Improvement Plan, which aims to make the borough a pleasant and enjoyable place to live, work, visit and enjoy. By enhancing Ashford’s overall appearance and attractiveness this will raise civic pride and make the borough more attractive for residents, visitors and businesses.

Grass cutting season is about to begin – things to be aware of:

As we move into the new season, our Grounds Maintenance team is gearing up to start grass cutting across our sites.

However, we want to make the public aware that some areas may still be too wet for our machinery. These locations haven’t been overlooked or forgotten — they’re simply not suitable for cutting at the moment.

Thank you for your support as we kick off another busy cutting season!

🍃With the mowing season here again and the movement of 'No Mow May' we wanted to keep you updated on how we maintain the open spaces we manage in the borough.

We carefully consider the scheme every year and as with previous years, we are not taking part in the blanket approach to No Mow May.

Instead we develop and implement land management plans for all the areas we maintain. This managed approach allows us to carry out long term changes to appropriate areas of land, in support of increasing biodiversity and connectivity for nature and people. This includes enhancements such as meadow creation, tree and hedgerow planting.

Our aim is to balance aesthetics, nature, residential use and engagement.

You may have seen our pollinator signs, which we put out on some of the sites and meadow areas where we have ceased mowing to support biodiversity.

Hello everyone, just to let you know over the next few weeks, our team will be doing some work near Hunter Avenue where we'll sadly need to remove some trees which have outgrown their surroundings and are now causing damage to property.

Considering the close proximity of the trees to the play area, we have made the decision to remove the trees in order to eliminate any future risk of failure towards the recreation ground. These particular trees also had one dead stem fall into the proximity of the play area after a recent storm which we removed and made safe in a timely manner.

We will of course be carrying out a thorough check for any nesting activity prior to working in the trees and if any nests are found, these trees will be left until a suitable time that we can proceed.

We always take pride in tree management within the borough and maintain where possible but in this situation, the safety of our community is paramount.

We are sure you are well aware 🌧- however the wet weather we are experiencing and the temperatures we are (hopefully🌡) due to expect is the perfect conditions for grass to grow very quickly.

The wet weather has also meant we haven't been able to mow as much as we would have liked to at this stage, therefore if some grass areas appear to have been missed, this isn't the case, they just remain too wet to cut.

As the weather warms if you find some grass near you is getting on the long side please be assured everything that is due to be cut will be, but we need to keep to the route set to ensure the borough remains on the same sequence.

With the mowing season here again, we would like to inform residents that we will again not be participating in No Mow May.

Rather than adopting a blanket approach to not mowing any grass in May, we are continuing to develop and implement land management plans for all of the areas we maintain.

This managed approach allows us to carry out long term changes to appropriate areas of land, in support of increasing biodiversity and connectivity for nature and people.

We have been placing pollinator signs out on some of the sites and meadow areas where we have ceased mowing to support biodiversity.

So keep an eye out if you see them across the borough. 👀 🌱

Hi everyone,
You may see us continuing to water our floral displays and newly planted trees during the water restrictions that are coming into place from South East Water on Friday 12 August. For those that are concerned, please be reassured that this is allowed within the restrictions due to the watering being from a self-contained bowser, filled from an alternative source. Watering is only undertaken in dry weather to allow plants and trees to survive, which have been planted in our parks and open spaces for the enjoyment of our communities. We are ensuring the water is used wisely, each floral display contains a water reservoir allowing us to ensure watering is effective, whilst newly planted trees have irrigation systems installed, allowing the water to immediately travel to the root systems, therefore minimising the need to over-water the surrounding ground.

These pollinator signs are ready to be placed out on some of the sites and meadow areas that we have identified as areas where we have ceased mowing to support biodiversity. 🌱

Rather than adopting a blanket approach to not mowing any grass in May, we are looking to develop bespoke maintenance plans for key sites which will see us relaxing the mowing regimes of certain areas with a view to allowing these to become meadows.

We’ve taken on board feedback from residents previously when we’ve not mowed grass verges and other places, clearly a topic which can divide public opinion and attract criticism. In addition, not all areas are suitable for a no mow approach, giving rise to complaints of poor visibility and aesthetical appearance.

This managed approach will allow us to identify only suitable areas, supporting connectivity, biodiversity and our climate change agenda longer term.

So keep a look out for these signs across the borough!
