What does ‘Design for Independence’ actually mean?

For some people, it means wheelchair accessibility. For others, it means creating homes that are safer, easier to use and better suited to changing needs over time.

Good design can help people live more comfortably, maintain independence and feel confident in their own home - whatever their age or mobility needs.

For many families, the question isn’t if a home needs to adapt - it’s when.

Recent reports from Age UK and Habinteg highlight a widening gap between how people want to live, and what their homes allow.

We’re seeing this play out across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Individuals or families often reach a point where stairs, bathrooms or layouts begin to limit daily life.

The challenge isn’t always about finding a more accessible home. It’s about making the existing one work better.

Thoughtfully adapted or reconfigured properties help people stay independent, and in familiar surroundings, for longer. They can also comfortably support and enhance the lives of multi-generational families under one roof.

We’re thrilled to share that Freedom Living Solutions is now officially registered as a Home Adaptations Installer Network (HAIN) member - and proudly TrustMark-registered!

This is more than just a badge - it’s a Government-endorsed mark of quality and trust that offers real reassurance to the people and professionals we work with. TrustMark is the only quality scheme endorsed by Government for work in and around the home, and membership demonstrates we meet rigorous standards for workmanship, customer service and professionalism.

Being part of the Home Adaptations Installer Network, developed with Foundations, means our business has been pre-vetted and approved as a trusted installer for Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)-supported projects. The design stage is now underway for a new disability-adapted home. And this is where everything begins.

We have worked with this family from the very start, including helping them choose the right property to adapt.

Now, in consultation with their Occupational Therapist and Court-Appointed Deputy, we are shaping a home that will support independence, dignity and family life.

The transformation will be significant - and carefully considered. Because an accessible home is not just about ramps and doorways. It is about living well, every day.

**Planning Submitted for Our Accessible Holiday Home**

We are excited to share that planning has now been submitted for our fully accessible and inclusive holiday home in Dorset!

This project will transform an existing bungalow into a welcoming, wheelchair-accessible holiday home designed for comfort, dignity and togetherness.

The ground floor will feature step-free access throughout, well-thought out spaces, widened doorways, a ceiling hoist system, and a fully equipped accessible bedroom and wet room.

Outside, the gardens and pathways will be fully accessible, with WAV parking and peaceful garden views to enjoy from both levels.

Built to the highest standards, this holiday home will combine inclusive design, sustainability and comfort – creating a place where everyone can truly relax.

We are kicking off 2026 with a positive reflection on Freedom's activities over the past 12 months.

Handing over finished accessible properties is always a major highlight, and this year was no exception. Especially in the case of our disability-adapted accessible annexe project in Canterbury, which enabled our client to enjoy Christmas in the comfort of their new bespoke designed home.

The Freedom team is also well into the design stages for another significant bespoke new build disability-adapted property in Kent.

It was a busy year for planning applications, with approval gained for wide-ranging residential and commercial projects. These included an accessible multi-generational family home conversion, and a package of accessibility works for the Connaught Club sports venue.

Exciting announcements in 2025 included the accessible 'Freedom Holiday Home' project and a unique 'Land and Bespoke Accessible Home Build' package. We are looking forward to sharing more information on those offerings in the coming months.

During the year, we also acquired several new accreditations that are key for client assurance and the delivery of high-quality, safe, and inclusive design and construction services.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming Ricardo Mariano to the architectural design team. Ricardo's input will be an invaluable contribution to our growing Design and Consultancy service.

As we bring 2025 to a close, we’re proud to reflect on another year of delivering transformative accessibility projects for clients and communities across Kent and the South East.

Our sincere thanks go to our valued clients and project partners, and to the dedicated funding, healthcare and legal professionals who play such a vital role in each project. Your expertise and collaboration help make life-changing outcomes possible.

We take great pride in knowing that, together, we’ve helped clients return home from hospital to enjoy Christmas with their family comfortably and safely.

Freedom Living Solutions wishes everyone a peaceful and joyful Christmas break, and a happy and healthy 2026.

Christmas Closing: Our offices will be closed between 24 December and 4 January.
