🌿 POSITION FILLED | ASSISTANT GARDENER | EC76040

📍 Oxfordshire
🏡 36-Acre Private Estate

For someone who enjoys variety and being outdoors, this is the kind of gardening role where no two days are likely to look quite the same.

We’re delighted to have successfully placed an Assistant Gardener at a beautiful private estate near Burford, where they’ll be helping to care for 4–5 acres of established formal gardens alongside the wider grounds and a newly planted woodland.

The gardens themselves offer plenty to get involved with such as a Japanese garden, lawns and landscaped borders to hedging, shrubs and fruit trees.

🌱 The new gardener will be working across:

🌿 Seasonal planting, pruning and garden maintenance
✂️ Hedging, topiary and shrub care
🍎 Fruit tree pruning
🌸 Care of the Japanese garden and formal areas
🌳 Establishment and ongoing care of the young woodland
🚜 Mowing, strimming and wider grounds maintenance
🏡 General practical tasks that come with caring for a private estate

What makes this placement especially appealing is the opportunity to develop alongside the estate. As the newly planted woodland establishes, the successful candidate will be able to take increasing responsibility for its care while continuing to build their horticultural and practical skills across the wider property.

Jay Rimell managed the recruitment for this position, helping to find someone with not only the right gardening experience, but also the practical, adaptable approach needed for such a varied estate role.

We’re delighted to have made another successful match and wish the new Assistant Gardener every success as they settle into the estate and make the role their own. 🌿

🌳 CAN A 300-YEAR-OLD TREE GROW BACK?

Three years after the iconic Sycamore Gap tree beside Hadrian’s Wall was illegally felled, there are encouraging signs that the historic tree may be recovering.

The approximately 300-year-old sycamore was one of the UK’s most photographed trees and famously featured in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

After it was felled in September 2023, the National Trust fenced off the remaining stump and introduced measures designed to give the tree the best possible chance of survival.

🌱 NOW, NEW SHOOTS ARE FLOURISHING FROM THE STUMP.

The National Trust says that reducing soil compaction around the roots and limiting human disturbance appear to be helping the tree recover.

The tree continues to be closely monitored, with its future management depending on how it develops.

🌱 At the same time, experts are growing new trees from cuttings and seeds taken from the original, with some potentially able to become mature trees within around 25 years.

🌿 THE SKILLS BEHIND LONG-TERM TREE CARE

The story highlights the specialist knowledge and patience involved in caring for significant trees and historic landscapes.

From monitoring growth and managing soil conditions to protecting root systems and understanding how trees respond to damage, professional horticultural and arboricultural skills can play an important role in giving trees the best chance of survival.

For gardeners, grounds professionals and arborists working across historic estates, parks and significant landscapes, tree care often means thinking far beyond the current season.

🌳 Could the Sycamore Gap tree become an example of how careful management can help historic trees recover?

🐝 COULD BRITAIN’S NEW BANKNOTES PUT NATURE IN THE SPOTLIGHT?

The next generation of UK banknotes is going wild. 🌿

The Atlantic puffin, barn owl, buff-tailed bumblebee and European hedgehog have been chosen as the central images for the Bank of England’s next series of notes.

And the public had a big say in the decision.

Almost 500,000 people responded to the consultation, choosing their favourites from a shortlist of 18 native species.

The eventual four include some very familiar faces from Britain’s gardens, landscapes and countryside:

🐝 Buff-tailed bumblebee – receiving an impressive 360,399 selections
🦉 Barn owl – the public’s favourite bird
🦔 European hedgehog – the most popular mammal
🐧 Atlantic puffin – chosen as the most popular marine animal

The new designs will celebrate the variety of wildlife found across the UK, while other elements of nature could also feature alongside the four central species.

For those working across horticulture, landscaping and grounds management, there’s something particularly fitting about seeing biodiversity represented in something millions of us encounter in everyday life.

After all, gardens and managed landscapes can play an important part in supporting many of the species we’ve chosen to celebrate.

From pollinator-friendly planting and connected hedgerows to habitat creation and more wildlife-conscious landscape management, the work happening across our industry can help create the spaces wildlife needs.

The notes themselves are still some way off, with design, testing and production expected to take several years.

But perhaps their message is already a valuable one:

🌿 Britain’s wildlife is something worth recognising, celebrating – and protecting.

💬 Which of the four would you like to see on the £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes?
