I’ve often been asked why do I need an EICR, my electrics have never tripped. And I understand, we often believe “what we cannot see cannot hurt us.” Expect all the electricity in your house is hidden, ironically electricity itself is an invisible force. You MOT your car, service your gas boiler every year, when was the last time you had an Electrical inspection. Probably never. And like everything, cables and accessories wear. Anyway to the point, these photos below I believe, some up why and EICR is so important. Carrying out one today on behalf of and I came across this little beauty. Upon testing continuity of the kitchen ring I found in the phase/live cable to have a very high resistance, which if you’ve been doing this as long as myself will mean only one thing, a loose connection. Upon investigation, I found this cable which had melted the insulation of the cable together, melted the inside of the socket, all through what once upon a time would’ve been either a loose connection, has slowly over the last 20 years got worse, yes that’s how long ago the kitchen was installed, has now melted together in to the socket and the cable together. Had this EICR not been carried out and left, the could’ve potentially turned in to a fire 🔥. So if anyone ever asks why we do EICRs, show this this picture, and explain it’s to stop hidden faults like this burning your house down.
