Something is happening near you this summer.

SPAB Scotland has a run of events coming up - from a free social evening in Edinburgh to a course series travelling the country to help congregations and communities look after historic places of worship.

Tuesday 2 September - Edinburgh

An informal SPAB Scotland pub meet-up at the historic Leslie's Bar, Southside - a relaxed chance to catch up with members, volunteers and friends, and meet this year's Fellows. Free, just your bar bill.

Maintaining Scotland's Historic Places of Worship

A practical one-day introductory course exploring how your historic church, chapel or synagogue works, and the steps you can take to look after it. Ideal for anyone involved in caring for a place of worship - congregation members, committees, trustees or volunteers. £12 per person.

📍 25 August — Edinburgh (Newington Trinity Mayfield Church)
📍 22 September — Forfar (Guthrie Village Hall)
📍 29 October — Glasgow (Garnethill Synagogue)

There's also a free course on 23 September at Bedrule Church, on the practicalities of community ownership of rural church buildings - useful for any group considering taking one on.

Amazing discovery of the ornamental garden due to the heatwave conditions

Almost exactly 4 years to the day when our Conservation Accredited Architect, Rebecca, met Jan at to have a look at the failing roofs on the tower and South side of the Abbey, that had suffered some catastrophic floods during the lockdown period.
Hard years of fundraising by Jan and the Abbey, and despair at the cancellation of the Listed Places of Worship grant scheme for the VAT, today all has been overcome and we had the pre-start meeting with the main contractor appointed, . A real milestone achieved.
Now we will have the fun of a very high level repair project with most of the repair work to be accessed by rope teams, and ourselves reviewing from safe locations !

Our first major solar installation project we have been involved with for a church is providing immediate support to the community outreach work at St Mary's in Hamilton from the day it was connected !
The grants have been greatly appreciated by the church as the costs for a pv array of this size is not a cheap option they could have afforded without support.

We are delighted to share that the solar panel and battery installation at St Mary’s for All Church and Community Centre in Hamilton is now complete and fully operational.

Our designs for the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory have taken a major step forward with planning permission granted by Dumfries and Galloway Council. The project now moves forward with opening planned for 2027 .

The facility in Galloway will replace one which burned down in Ayrshire more than four years ago.
