A few practical solutions and considerations whilst rebuilding this wall.

The original wall will adjoins the outbuilding was mortared. There is a change in style to dry stone and a change in style of coping stones just before the sycamore tree.

Rather than fell the tree, which the client wanted to keep, a decision to curve around the sycamore rather than bridge its roots was taken. I prefer this method. It just felt right for this job in the village.

The section with the cover band (flat coping stones) was built plumb with the coping laid in lime with a nod to the original. The rest of the wall from the curve onwards was built with a batter.

Someone else started this job at the other end, didn't return for whatever reason. It doesn't really matter. I was happy to finish the job.

There are lots of walls in the village with different styles both mortared and dry. I've been working there on the odd job for a few years now. I don't mind the travel, love working there and like a chat with the residents out for a stroll.

Blebocraigs is just outside of St. Andrews in Fife. A lovely little place.

Creating Authenticity: Behind the Scenes of Set Design for Outlander Prequel

Our team collaborated with production designers to build authentic ruins of a drystone wall for Outlander TV series prequel 'Blood Of My Blood' which can be watched on Disney plus.

From building the stonework to laying the moss as part of the set design. It was a great experience to be a part of, with special thanks to Billy Drystane Dyking Services for being part of the team!

After and before of a cheekend rebuild. The original was laid in mortar and was too short, with the new cheekend matching the height of the wall. In addition, a section of wall has been shortened to allow for a wider access. Additional granite was added for choice when tying in to the existing drystone wall.
