We're hiring: Senior Civil Engineering Technician (Barnsley)

We're looking for a Civil/Structural Technician to produce general arrangement drawings and details for bridges, stations, substations and flood alleviation schemes, coordinating Revit models to BIM level 2 and ISO 19650.

You'll bring experience with Autodesk Revit and Civils 3D, a sharp eye for detail, and you'll enjoy client-facing work, design team meetings and site visits.

Meet Marc Keeley - Principal Surveyor at Matrix Consulting Engineers

We're proud to introduce Marc as part of our Employee Spotlight series!

Marc's journey into engineering started at 17, when a visit to the careers office led him to the Royal Engineers. After five years of military service, including deployments to Cyprus, the Falklands and Kenya, he earned his HND Level 3 in Survey Engineering and discovered a real passion for the profession.

From there, Marc spent nine years at Central Alliance, working his way up from Junior Surveyor to Senior Surveyor, gaining extensive experience across rail, highways, substations, canals and more.

Now at Matrix, Marc has taken on an exciting challenge, growing our survey department. From drone surveys and point cloud processing to topographical drawings and client liaison, he's shaping the future of surveying at Matrix.

Since joining, Marc has already made a real impact. His military discipline, technical expertise and hands-on approach have been invaluable as he establishes our surveying capabilities and expands the services we can offer our clients. We're excited to see the team grow under his leadership.

His standout moment so far? A drone survey of a 2.5km quarry across challenging, remote terrain, a project that took serious planning and left the client seriously impressed.

Outside of work, you'll find Marc bouldering or out hiking in the countryside.

His advice for new surveyors? "Learn a variety of things to begin with, then specialise later. Learn the theory and reason behind the processes."

Meet Dan Patten, Principal Technician at Matrix!

Dan joined Matrix in March 2026, bringing with him 16 years of experience from Arup, where he honed his expertise in bridges and heavy civil engineering. From rail and highway bridges to major earthworks and retaining walls, Dan has worked on some impressive large-scale projects across multiple disciplines.

A proud Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with the Institution of Civil Engineers, Dan's journey from trainee to professionally recognised engineer is a testament to his dedication and passion for the industry.

So what does Dan actually do? In his own words: "I make Civil Engineers' dreams come true! My job is to take engineering calculations and turn them into clash-free geometric designs."

One of the things Dan finds most rewarding is seeing his models and drawings used directly on site, watching a design come to life from screen to structure.

Outside of work, Dan is a keen golfer, a proud new dad to his 10-month-old son, and a long-suffering Barnsley FC supporter. And for reasons that may or may not be obvious… his nickname is Mr Bean.

His advice for new engineers entering the field? "Never stop learning. Be inquisitive, ask questions and always look one step ahead."

Since joining Matrix, Dan has hit the ground running. He's already making projects his own, bringing fresh ideas and a wealth of technical knowledge to the team. His experience across multiple disciplines and his ability to coordinate complex designs between clients, contractors, engineers and architects has been a real asset to the business. We're thrilled to have him on board.
