This farm's diesel generator has been silent since 16 March.

Park Hill Farm runs a working yard and an agricultural fabrication business — welders, machine tools, three-phase plant. No mains connection. It used to run entirely on a diesel generator: over £150 a week in fuel and maintenance, around £7,800 a year.

Since March it's run on solar and battery. The generator hasn't turned on once. It's still there, wired in as backup — but day to day the sun runs the yard.

Spring figures straight off the live monitor: 3,874 kWh of solar, the generator used only in early March. That's it.

If your farm, yard or site runs on a generator, this is what the alternative looks like. Details and live data in the comments.

Best time to plan your electrical system? 👉 Right at the start.

This widebeam is still in early stages — which is exactly when cable routes, equipment locations, and future upgrades should be thought through.

Once walls go in, everything becomes harder, messier, and more expensive to change.

A bit of planning now means:
✔️ Cleaner installs
✔️ Better performance
✔️ Easier future upgrades
✔️ No nasty surprises later

Even if you’re not installing everything yet, getting the infrastructure in place early makes a huge difference.

Plan first. Build once.

Nice tidy solar install on a narrowboat ☀️

Panels up and cabling run through cleanly — simple, solid upgrade to keep things topped up off-grid.

These kinds of installs make a big difference, especially heading into the brighter months.

If you’re thinking about adding solar to your boat, drop me a message.

Clean, simple, and effective.

Flexible solar panels on a widebeam — low profile, no bulky frames, and built to work with the boat rather than fight it.

I installed this on a widebeam moored on the banks of the Avon.

Whilst these panels aren’t as efficient as rigid panels, and can’t be angled to the sun, they look great — and on a widebeam like this, there’s plenty of roof space to make them work.

This is how I like to do it:
• Panels laid out properly
• Cables kept tidy and protected
• Nothing unnecessary on the roof

Good installs aren’t about cramming on more kit — they’re about doing it properly.

This one will quietly do its job day after day
