Introducing our Celtic Tiles, a distinctive handmade clay roof tile that preserves a rare British roofing tradition dating back to the 1850s.

At William Blyth, we are proud to be the last remaining manufacturer in the UK still producing Celtic Tiles by hand. Defined by their flat pan and subtle single roll, Celtic Tiles offer a refined, understated profile well suited to conservation areas, listed buildings, and heritage-led developments.

Crafted from our own Humber alluvial clay and fired in our historic kilns, each tile develops natural variation in colour and texture, creating a roofscape with depth, character, and a quality that continues to mature over time.

Celtic Tiles are particularly well suited to projects where authenticity and detail matter, including:
- Conservation and listed building work requiring historically appropriate materials
- Architects specifying regionally sensitive roofscapes
- Heritage restorations where continuity of appearance is essential
- Developments seeking a softer, more traditional roof profile

Available in Natural Red, Weathered, Light Antique, and Dark Earth, the range can be blended to create a natural and varied finish.

With proven performance and a heritage appearance, Celtic Tiles offer a considered choice for projects where longevity, character, and craftsmanship are paramount.

Celebrating National Gardening Week 🪴

At William Blyth, much like our handmade clay roof tiles, our heritage garden pottery is hand-thrown from our own Humber alluvial clay and fired in our historic kilns to create durable, frost-proof terracotta with natural character.

Led by our skilled potter, Gabriel Nichols, each piece is made using time-honoured techniques. Subtle variations in form and finish ensure no two pieces are the same, developing strength and beauty as they weather over time.

From traditional estate gardens to contemporary outdoor spaces, our collection includes:
- Handmade flower pots with enduring quality and natural colour
- Bespoke and personalised pieces, crafted for lasting significance
- Traditional and decorative forms designed to sit naturally within their surroundings

This , we celebrate outdoor spaces shaped with care and intention.

The most sustainable materials are those made to last 🌍

At William Blyth, environmental responsibility is not an addition to our process. It's built into it.

We work with natural Humber clay from our own on site reserves, reducing transportation impact and keeping production close to source. Every tile is handmade using traditional methods, shaped with care and fired for long term performance.

Our approach to sustainable clay roof tiles is simple and considered:
• Chemical free, with no additives or sealants
• Waste conscious, with materials reused wherever possible
• Long lasting, designed to weather naturally and endure for generations

Operating from our historic site, we continue a craft that values durability over disposal. While our firing methods remain traditional, they are carefully managed to produce tiles that outlast modern alternatives, reducing the need for replacement and unnecessary waste.

This Earth Day, we are proud to support and promote a more responsible approach to building. One that respects natural materials, reduces impact over time, and protects the character of the built environment.

Working on a listed building requires careful material choices, particularly when it comes to the roof.

For conservation professionals, selecting the right roof tiles for listed buildings means balancing planning requirements, historic authenticity, and long-term durability. The wrong specification can affect both the character of the building and the approval process.

In our latest guide, we explore key considerations when specifying roof tiles for heritage properties, including planning compliance, matching historic materials, and why traditional handmade clay tiles remain widely trusted for conservation projects.
