🏠 Utility Room Rewire

A new electrical installation carried out in a utility room, including new double sockets and surface-mounted conduit throughout, providing a neat, practical and durable finish.

🏢 Commercial Electrical Maintenance

Attended a commercial premises to replace three burnt-out contactors responsible for controlling the external lighting.

The existing contactors had suffered significant heat damage, so these were replaced with new units to restore reliable operation of the lighting system.

⚡ ELECTRICAL SAFETY TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS 🏡

At HJT Electrical Services, we believe electrical safety is just as important as keeping your home looking its best!

Here are a few simple tips that every homeowner should know. 👇

🔌 1. Don’t overload your sockets

Avoid plugging too many high-powered appliances into extension leads, particularly heaters, kettles and tumble dryers. Overloading can cause overheating and potentially lead to fires.

⚡ 2. Test your RCD regularly

Your consumer unit may have RCD protection designed to disconnect the electricity if certain faults occur. Press the test button at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer, commonly every six months. If it doesn’t trip, contact an electrician.

🔥 3. Look out for warning signs

Sockets or switches that feel unusually hot, buzzing noises, burning smells or discolouration can indicate an electrical fault. Stop using the affected equipment and arrange an inspection.

💡 4. Flickering lights aren’t always just a faulty bulb

If you’ve changed a bulb and the flickering continues, it could indicate a loose connection or another electrical issue worth investigating.

🏠 5. Know when your electrics were last inspected

For owner-occupied homes, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is generally recommended at least every 10 years, or when moving into a property. Older installations may need more frequent inspections.

🚨 6. Check your smoke alarms

Test your smoke alarms regularly, ideally weekly, and make sure they’re working correctly. A functioning smoke alarm could save your life.

🌧️ 7. Be careful with outdoor electrics

Outdoor sockets, lighting and electrical equipment should be suitable for external conditions. Damaged covers, water ingress or exposed cables should never be ignored.

🔧 8. Don’t ignore a circuit breaker that keeps tripping

If your electrics repeatedly trip, there’s usually a reason. Avoid continually resetting the breaker without investigating the cause. If it keeps happening, arrange for a qualified electrician to investigate.

⚡️This is why periodic electrical inspections are so important.⚡️

During an inspection at a property today, we uncovered significant deterioration around the incoming supply and earthing arrangement.

The electrics were still working — lights on, sockets working, no obvious signs to the homeowner that anything was wrong.

But as you can see from the photos, working doesn’t always mean safe.

Electrical installations deteriorate over time, and problems can develop completely unnoticed.

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) checks the condition and safety of the electrical installation and can identify issues before they potentially become much more serious.

If you’re unsure when your home was last inspected, it may be worth getting it checked.

🔐 New Nursery Site – Video Intercom Installation

Another project underway for a returning nursery client as they get their new location ready to open.

We installed a new video intercom system, giving staff clear video and audio communication with anyone at the entrance, along with remote gate release from inside the building.

For a nursery, controlling who can access the site is obviously a massive priority, so this gives staff a simple and secure way of checking visitors before allowing entry.

Really pleased with how this one came together, and always great to be trusted with work at another site as our clients continue to grow. ⚡️

Bathroom Lighting & Ventilation Upgrade Completed

Another bathroom in Canvey brought up to date with a simple but effective upgrade.

For this project we:
💡 Replaced the existing ageing downlights with new LED downlights.
🔧 Installed oversized surrounds to cover the marks left by the previous fittings, avoiding unnecessary ceiling repairs and redecoration.
🌬️ Replaced the existing extractor fan with a new timer and humidity-controlled low voltage extractor fan, helping to reduce condensation, mould and excess moisture long after you’ve left the room.
