🔬 An exciting find in the LAB UK laboratory this morning!

A big well done to Dylan, one of our newest Bulk Analysts, who identified anthophyllite asbestos within a magnesite flooring sample during analysis this morning. 👏🧡

Anthophyllite is one of the six regulated asbestos fibre types and belongs to the amphibole group. It is considerably less commonly encountered in UK building materials than chrysotile, amosite or crocidolite, which makes finding and correctly identifying it particularly interesting for a bulk analyst.

Magnesite flooring is typically a reddish-brown, cement-like flooring material that was used extensively during the 20th century. Some older magnesite flooring products can contain asbestos, and anthophyllite is one of the fibre types that may occasionally be encountered.

Under polarised light microscopy (PLM), anthophyllite has its own characteristic optical properties which allow a trained analyst to distinguish it from the other amphibole asbestos types.

For Dylan, who is still one of the newer members of our bulk analysis team, this was a brilliant sample to come across and a great opportunity to put his training and microscopy skills into practice.

It certainly made for a fun and exciting morning in the lab — it's not every day anthophyllite turns up on the microscope!

Today we’ve got James, our new trainee surveyor, spending some time in the laboratory and starting right at the beginning — asbestos bulk identification.

Before heading out onto site, we think it’s important to understand exactly what happens to the samples once they arrive back at the lab: how different materials are identified, what our analysts are looking for and, most importantly, how asbestos fibres are recognised.

Once James has got the bulk identification qualification under his belt, it’ll be time for the next stage — getting out there and developing his skills as a trainee asbestos surveyor. 🏠🔍

A new career doesn’t happen overnight. It’s lots of little steps, plenty of training, hands-on experience and learning from the people around you.

Step one is underway! Welcome to the team, James — we’re looking forward to watching your new career develop. 👏
