!! SOLAR SCAM ALERT !!
Essex Trading Standards has issued a warning. SCAMMERS posing as a solar panel company are targeting Essex residents, it has been warned.

Essex Trading Standards said 971 reports of phishing emails relating to solar panels had been received by Action Fraud in the past two weeks. The emails invite recipients to check if they are eligible to receive funding to cover the upfront costs of installing solar panels.A link in the message leads to a page where victims are asked to enter their financial details or download dangerous malware to their device.

“Don't use the numbers or address in the message - use the details from their official website.

“Your bank (or any other official source) will never ask you to supply personal information via email.”

Funding for panels has very stringent requirements & if you would like to find out if you qualify, check the UK government website to find out more!

Scotland’s largest construction trade body, SELECT, outgoing President, has issued a warning of the rise of rogue tradespeople pretending to be qualified electricians who are taking advantage of the boom in domestic renewables technology.

Alistair Grant, who will soon end his two-year tenure at the organisation, has warned of the increasing concern throughout the industry of the dangers of incorrectly installed technology including electric vehicle (EV) charging points and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.

Mr Grant, has said with demand from consumers on the increase, SELECT members are reporting an alarming increase in shoddy and dangerous workmanship that has had to be resolved by qualified and fully-trained electricians.

He said: “With governments driving the transition to net zero, and homeowners being urged to play their part, we’ve seen an increase in ‘green energy experts’ coming forward to take advantage of demand, yet it’s obvious that a lot of these so-called experts have no wider knowledge of electrical best practice or safety.

“Electrical installations these days are very complex and the fitting of technology like domestic EV charge points, battery storage and solar panels needs to be carried out by professional electricians, not people who’ve merely done a short course.

“The needs of every home are unique and complicated when it comes to electrical installations, yet we are hearing numerous reports of SELECT members being called out to rectify work that is not only shoddy but downright dangerous.”

More than 140,000 households have installed panels and 4,000 public EV charge points are already in place, with Transport Scotland estimating that the nation will need around 30,000 charge points by 2030.

Mr Grant added: “As demand grows, some fellow members have told me ‘it’s like the Wild West out there’, with rogue companies literally knocking on doors and offering to install renewable electrical equipment for a knockdown price.

“Unfortunately in the current cost of living crisis, consumers are often making decisions purely on cost alone, not realising that they could face a much higher bill later for getting the work put right and made safe.

“Even more worryingly, they might not realise anything is wrong at all, and end up paying the ultimate price further down the line when any hidden faults cause a fire or worse.”

Mr Grant pointed to a survey carried out by Electrical Safety First in conjunction with Loughborough University in which out of 1,700 homes examined, 80% had electrical faults, 50% of which were critical.

He added: “One solar installation which I was called out to recently had direct current cabling running from the roof, directly through a pile of children’s toys in the loft and into a cupboard in the home – the potential for a disastrous fire was obvious to see.

“This is typical of the kind of things we are seeing, and just emphasises why consumers should ALWAYS use a full-trained and qualified electrician for EVERY electrical job.”

Stamp out Tool theft!!
As a self-employed tradesman, not only do I have to find my own work, but I have to supply a vehicle, insurance & buy my own tools only to be at the mercy of tool thieves. More than often, these tools end up at boot sales where the vicious circle begins. I never buy tools from facebay or boot sales as a matter of principle unless the vendor can prove ownership.

Whilst I am not advocating chopping off the offending hand, banning tool sales at car boot sales might be step in the right direction. Please spare a couple of minutes to fill out this online petition to help eliminate this market of misery!!

Planning changes for heat pumps & car chargers on there way...
The Government is proposing to abolish a size limit on heat pumps to allow bigger units to be installed in a bid to cut down on noise pollution. The Levelling up Department has stated that, scrapping the size limit would enable the pump to run at a lower speed and minimise noise levels after concerns were raised by acoustic scientists that smaller models were “too noisy” for millions of homes, the department said.

At the same time, the Government is proposing to ease the rules governing where electric car chargers can be placed within the off-street parking areas of sites such as offices, supermarkets and blocks of flats. Restrictions preventing chargers being located within two metres of a highway, or facing on to a highway, would be scrapped under government plans, while the maximum height would be increased from 2.3 metres to 2.7 metres – about the height of one of London’s red telephone boxes.

Would you like to see more public chargers on your street?

Gloucestershire's very own football club has become the first in its league to convert to renewable power, with Cheltenham Town Football Club's stadium now powered by solar energy.

The 213 high-performance solar photovoltaic panels on top of both the Colin Farmer and Hazlewoods Stands, the installation at the Robins' stadium is also the largest solar rooftop project in Cheltenham.

The solar panels will provide over 25 per cent of the stadium’s power and, with the integration of other energy-saving initiatives such as LED floodlights, 30 per cent of the stadium's huge energy usage is set to be powered by renewable energy, with savings of around £21,000 a year in electricity costs.

What is thermal runaway & should I be worried?
The process of thermal runaway starts when a battery cell overheats, perhaps due to an internal fault, physical or electrical abuse, or extreme temperatures. This elevated cell temperature results in exothermic reactions, which produce more heat than can be dissipated to surroundings. Eventually, the internal structure of the cell begins to become unstable and collapse, resulting in the venting of flammable and toxic gases, fire and explosion. The heat spreads to nearby cells, causing them also to enter an uncontrollable and irreversible state of thermal runaway.
In the video you can see what can cause thermal runaway to occur, especially in relation to e-bikes and e-scooters along with advice on what to do if you find yourself in a situation where thermal runaway happens.

Probably the most stable pension investment in 2024!
A survey of pension funds and insurance companies has found significant interest in increasing investment into renewable energy. UK pension funds and insurers are keen to increase allocations to renewable energy in the coming years, according to new research.
A survey by AlphaReal, a specialist real assets manager, found that a majority of pension funds and insurers planned to increase their allocation to renewable energy in the next year. The survey, which included institutions with a combined £360bn in assets under management, found that 90% of respondents planned to increase their allocation to renewables, with the remaining 10% open to the possibility.
The research also found that respondents expected their allocations to renewable energy to increase significantly in the next three years. “Pension funds and insurers are increasingly recognising the potential of renewable infrastructure to deliver competitive returns while contributing to environmental sustainability,” said Stuart Hanson, associate director for client solutions at AlphaReal. The most common reason cited by respondents for increasing their allocation was the desire to generate an income (85%). Respondents also cited portfolio diversification (71%) and alignment with environmental, social and governance objectives (68%). The research indicates a growing momentum in renewable energy investment. Data from BloombergNEF showed that more than $358bn (£283bn) was invested in this sector globally in the first six months of 2023, a 22% increase on the first half of 2022.
