General Cold-Weather Pruning Tips:

Prune on a mild, dry day. Not only is this more pleasant for you, the gardener—it also helps to prevent the spreading of waterborne plant diseases or damage from cold temperatures.
Never prune too early in the winter, as incisions can dry out if the temperature drops well below freezing.
When pruning, first prune out dead and diseased branches, especially those caused by the winter's snow and ice.
Unwanted lower branches on all evergreen shrubs and trees should also be removed in late winter.
Remove overgrown and smaller branches to increase light and air at the crown of the tree.
In general, your goal is to keep the branches that develop or maintain the structure of the tree.
Cut branches at the node, the point at which one branch or twig attaches to another.

What to do in the garden in January

Pruning and tidying

• Prune your wisteria – cut back summer side shoots to 2 or 3 buds.

• Prune rose bushes –January is the perfect time to do this as roses are still dormant. Cut back to just above a bud and remove any crossing or dead branches.

• Cut back ornamental grasses. Clip the old foliage from ornamental grasses before new growth begins – cut back to within a few centimetres of the ground.

• Tidy up perennials. Cut down the old stems of perennial plants like sedum– be careful of any new growth.

• Remove old hellebore leaves – this will make new blooms more visible as they emerge this spring.

• Cut back willows. Trim the damaged, diseased and the oldest stems of brightly coloured willows, and thin out overcrowded stems.

• Deadhead winter pansies. Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed.

March Gardening Tips

• If the soil is workable, dig in a 5cm (or more) layer of compost or well rotted manure into your beds to prepare for the growing season ahead. You can also work in a general purpose fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure or fish, blood and bone.

• If you need to move deciduous trees or shrubs, now is the time to do it provided the soil is not frozen or waterlogged.

November gardening tips:

Winter is on its way

Leaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase. Tender plants (such as bananas) will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains.

Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can't, it is worth wrapping plants or pots in situ.

Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up.

September gardening tips:

Clear garden debris

Keep weeding; most perennial weeds are susceptible to weedkiller this month and systemic weedkillers will carry on working throughout the winter. Also clear any debris and diseased material from your garden. Pests and diseases that overwinter in your garden will reappear next spring with a vengeance so get rid of them now. Burn diseased material and put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost.

MAINTAIN A SAFE, HEALTHY LANDSCAPE

Now is the most critical time of year to prepare your trees and shrubs for the coming summer. This season brings everything from high temperatures to severe storms. Healthy trees are better able to withstand these extremes so trees should be given extra care.

Trees should be checked for dead, broken, or hanging branches as well as decay that could serve as an entry point for insects. Practices including fertilisation, irrigation and proper mulching are also important to maintaining overall plant health.

Monthy Tip: May is still a perfect month for planting asparagus, seed potatoes and the new autumn maturing rhubarb Livingstone.
