USL is currently on site at the 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸, undertaking specialist repair works to the historic timber block floor in the nave.

Following recommendations from a Quinquennial Inspection Report, our team is carefully lifting, cleaning and re-laying original timber blocks only where adhesion has failed or movement has occurred.

This conservation-led approach ensures the repaired areas integrate seamlessly with the surrounding floor, maintaining the visual continuity and long-term performance expected in a listed place of worship.

Working closely with Michael Swords Studio and the Parochial Church Council, we are delivering a minimal-intervention, high-craft solution that extends the life of this important historic fabric while keeping the church open and safe for its community.

Delighted to share that 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝟯𝟲 for our specialist stone masonry and conservation works at Christ Church, Kensington.

Our team completed a major restoration package to the tower, spire and chancel gable, combining traditional craftsmanship with robust technical delivery.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱:

• Renewal of the tower cornice
• Reinstatement of carved corner figures
• Installation of a new stone cross to the chancel gable
• Full lime mortar repointing, stone consolidation and internal cleaning
• Bell chamber clearance and repairs to bird guards and lightning protection fixings

𝗦𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆’𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 – 𝗥𝗲-𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗹

USL is pleased to be associated with the re-roofing works at St Mary’s, Hendon, a sensitive heritage project focused on the North Aisle and North Chapel. The scope included the careful strip-out of existing roof coverings, flashings, gutters and associated elements, followed by the installation of a new terne-coated stainless steel roof covering, lead flat roof and box gutter, new eaves boarding and renewed rainwater goods.

The project also included specialist masonry and conservation works, such as lime plaster re-rendering to the Lady Chapel high-level wall, repointing to the external masonry, and the careful removal, overhaul and reinstatement of clerestory windows. All works were carried out with protection, access and temporary roof arrangements in place to safeguard the building throughout.
This programme was carried out in partnership with Art Architects.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵:

St Mary’s Church, Hendon is a Grade II* listed parish church dating from the mid‑13th century, with records of worship on the site going back to at least 959 AD. It remains an important historic landmark in the busy Hendon community today.

What a wonderful day at St. George’s Church, Ivychurch!

It was a pleasure to see so many people come together to celebrate the completion of the major restoration project and to enjoy everything the day had to offer.

One of the highlights was a fascinating guided tour of the church led by RMHCT Trustee Celia Heritage, sharing the rich history, architecture and stories of this remarkable building.

Many thanks to everyone who came along to show their support throughout the day.

Events like these remind us that our historic churches are not just extraordinary buildings - they are living places at the heart of our communities, with centuries of stories to tell.

Universal Stone Limited (USL) is pleased to announce its appointment to the Tyburn Convent Sanctuary Renovation in London, a significant heritage and ecclesiastical project set within one of the capital’s most spiritually and historically important sites.

Set in the heart of London, Tyburn Convent stands near the historic Tyburn Gallows. Today, it is home to a cloistered Benedictine community devoted to prayer under the Rule of St Benedict. The chapel lies at the centre of convent life, comprising the sanctuary, choir, and tribune, spaces now set to undergo sensitive and transformative renewal.

Working in partnership with PELICAN ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN LTD (P-AD), USL will deliver a carefully considered programme of reordering works to the chapel, with a particular focus on the sanctuary.

The project is focused on the creation of a stunning, grand and beautifully crafted new main altar and reredos, designed to enhance the sacred setting while respecting the convent’s liturgical and architectural heritage. The works will also include bespoke stone and timber elements, conservation of existing features, and the integration of new liturgical furniture.

The project is now underway and encompasses specialist design, manufacture, and installation of the new stone altar and timber reredos, careful adaptation and restoration of existing pews and furnishings, sanctuary reordering works including flooring and terrazzo, and the integration of bespoke joinery, railings, and architectural features.

All works will be delivered with a sensitive, phased approach to respect the ongoing life and operation of the convent. This project reflects USL’s continued commitment to delivering high-quality heritage and ecclesiastical works, combining traditional craftsmanship with technical precision and considered project management.

𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 ⛪

We’re proud to share the completion of conservation works at Petre Chapel, Thorndon Park, Brentwood. A Grade II-listed Gothic Revival-style chapel set within a Grade II-registered park and garden. Universal Stone acted as Principal Contractor, delivering the works alongside +apt architects for the Historic Chapels Trust, with Churches Conservation Trust as client contact and support from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

The chapel was originally commissioned by the 12th Baron Petre in the Gothic Revival style, reflecting the long heritage of the Petre family, a celebrated Roman Catholic family of Essex since medieval times.

Our specialist restoration and stonemasonry team carried out a sensitive programme of conservation and repair works, including:

· Masonry and mortar repairs to buttresses, walls, parapets, copings and the bellcote.
· Roof, rainwater goods and drainage repairs.
· Restoration of windows, external steps, internal floor areas and the vestry door.
· Remediation works, ventilation, guarding, paving, stone slab covers and secure gates.
· New stainless-steel supports and minor alterations, including lead weathering and lightwell protection.

This project demonstrates the value of careful, collaborative conservation on sensitive heritage assets, preserving significance while supporting long-term stability and access.
