Kerb appeal starts at the gate. This Victorian-style black-and-white chequerboard path brings real character to the entrance, with a geometric border framing the pattern neatly.

Setting it out carefully was key. I planned the layout so the pattern and border meet the gate symmetrically, giving the path a balanced finish from the moment you arrive. Outside, the details beneath the tiles matter just as much as the design. I built in a fall to help rainwater drain away rather than pool, and used frost-resistant porcelain suitable for the British weather.

I love the balance in this bathroom, dark brown stone-effect porcelain around the walk-in shower and bath, paired with a warm wood-effect herringbone floor. The darker walls give the room depth, while the timber-look floor brings warmth and stops the overall feel from becoming too heavy.

The direction of a herringbone layout makes a real difference. Planned carefully, the pattern can draw the eye through the room and help the space feel connected. Large-format wall tiles also need a flat, properly prepared substrate to achieve an even finish and consistent joints.

I tank wet areas as standard, creating an important layer of protection behind the finished tiles. It’s the preparation you don’t see that helps give a bathroom a finish to enjoy with confidence for years to come.

A bathroom should look good today, but the best decisions are the ones that keep it practical for years to come.

When I’m planning a shower, level access is worth discussing early. The finished floor height, drainage, falls and waterproofing all need to work together to create a safe, properly detailed transition without an unnecessary trip lip.

It’s also the right time to think about slip resistance and contrast, so floor areas and edges are easier to distinguish. And if grab rails might be useful in future, suitable reinforcement can be built into the walls before they’re tiled.

These details are straightforward to plan during the work, but costly, or sometimes very difficult, to add once the tiles are in place. Good preparation helps create a bathroom that’s not only beautifully finished, but ready to adapt as needs change.

With the colder evenings on the way, a brick-slip feature wall and tiled hearth can bring real character to a room, in a modern house or especially in an older home.

There’s practical planning behind the look, too. Near a stove or open fire, I use an adhesive suitable for the heat and substrate. I also check the stove and hearth clearances against the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and relevant requirements before installation. A sound, level base and careful setting out help give the hearth a durable finish.

A bigger shower is planned at the drain, not chosen in the showroom.

More homeowners are looking to increase the size of their main shower, but the part that often gets overlooked is what has to happen before the first tile goes down. The waste position, floor build-up and falls, the choice between a tray and a level base, and exactly where the tanking finishes all need to be considered together.

If an existing drain can’t be moved, I’ll plan around its position and explain the options honestly. Depending on the layout and floor construction, that might mean adjusting the shower size or shape, choosing a suitable tray, or finding a practical way to form the falls to the existing waste. Forcing a design that doesn’t drain properly isn’t a good solution.

Getting these details right at the start helps protect the installation and gives the finished shower the look and function the homeowner wants. The tiles are the visible finish; the preparation underneath is what makes it work.

How will the walls or floor be prepared?
Will wet areas be properly waterproofed or tanked?
Which adhesive and grout will be used?
Are the materials supplied?
Exactly what is included in the quote?

If you live in a 1930s semi or a Victorian terrace around Bedfordshire, there’s a good chance very little is perfectly square, plumb or level, and that’s completely normal for an older house.

Before I start tiling, I check the walls and floors carefully. I’m looking for hollows, high spots, movement and changes in level, because tiling straight onto an uneven surface can create problems with alignment, lippage and finished appearance.

Where needed, I’ll pack out low areas or use suitable boards to create a flat, sound surface before the tiles go on. This is especially important with large-format tiles and plain walls, as they show up every deviation in the background. Even a small change in the wall can become very noticeable once the tile is fixed.

This is also why preparation can make up a significant part of a tiling quote. The finished quality doesn’t just come from cutting and fixing the tiles. A large part of it comes from getting the surface right first.

After more than 17 years in the trade, I know that taking the time to prepare properly gives the best chance of a clean, level and durable finish, and helps avoid problems further down the line.

A recessed shower niche is not simply a hole cut into the wall once the tiling is underway. It has to be planned before the first tile goes on.

On this blue floral patterned shower enclosure, the niche was set out to suit the tile layout, formed square and true, and positioned at a practical height so everything is within easy reach without bottles ending up on the shower floor.

It also needs to be tanked as part of the shower enclosure, with the waterproofing carefully continued into the niche so the protection remains intact. The dimensions and position are then checked against the tile joints, allowing the lines to continue neatly through the back, sides and surrounding walls.

Once tiled, the cleanly finished edges make the niche look like it belongs naturally within the pattern, rather than appearing as an afterthought. The black shower fittings complement the blue botanical design and complete the enclosure with a smart, cohesive finish.
