What if the biggest barrier to AI-driven productivity isn't the technology, it's the organisation itself?

The final instalment of our three-part series from Joulen COO John Carroll explores why the organisations that benefit most from AI won't simply adopt new tools, they'll fundamentally redesign how work gets done.

Drawing on insights from Sequoia, NVIDIA's Jensen Huang, and lessons from previous industrial revolutions, John argues that we're moving from AI as a tool to AI as a team of agents. That shift demands a new way of thinking about organisational design, leadership and operational processes.

The article also explores why the AI transition and the energy transition are inseparable and why intelligent energy infrastructure will underpin the next era of productivity.

If you've been following the series, this final piece brings the argument together. If you're joining now, it's a timely perspective on what business leaders should be thinking about next.

Periods of transformation demand more than innovation. They require clarity of vision, a compelling sense of purpose, a culture that empowers people to challenge convention, and the talent to turn motivation into meaningful change.

These principles have shaped Joulen's success to date, and continue to guide our role in the energy transition where our technology, our products and our people work together to enable a cleaner, more resilient power system.

In our latest leadership spotlight, Joulen CEO Chris Doherty shares his perspective on leading through one of the most significant transformations in the industry, why building the right culture, investing in the right people, and maintaining an unwavering focus on customer outcomes will be just as critical to that future.

Our CEO Chris Doherty features in Utility Week, outlining some of the risks in proposed changes to the wholesale market.

Joulen's mission is to unlock the full value of renewable and flexible energy technologies, improving investment returns and accelerating the transition to a cleaner, greener energy system. For this, our markets have to work for consumers and for the system.

While we support efforts to incentivise demand turn-up, to reduce curtailment costs and wasted energy, these efforts must not undermine the most important part: shifting demand away from times when power is scarce and prices are high. BSC modification P510, as proposed, fails that test.

Another year and another fantastic experience for Joulen at Intersolar and The smarter E in Munich.

The timing couldn't have been more relevant. While a heatwave swept much of Europe, GB wholesale power prices reminded us once again why accelerating solar deployment and unlocking greater flexibility across the grid remains so important. As demand rises and generation patterns shift, flexible assets and intelligent optimisation will only become more valuable.

As ever, The Smarter E lived up to its reputation as the industry's leading 4-in-1 European showcase, bringing together solar, battery storage, EV charging and smart energy under one roof. The scale, optimism, and sheer volume of conversations across the halls were as impressive as ever.

One of the strongest themes this year was renewed confidence across the industry. Conversations increasingly centred on sustainable growth, quality and long-term value creation, with a clear sense that the market is maturing and moving into its next phase.

For the Joulen team, the most valuable part of the week was the quality of conversations with partners and both new and existing customers. It was particularly encouraging to meet so many organisations that share our belief that the long-term success of flexibility markets depends on transparency and trust.

And of course, no trip to Intersolar would be complete without enjoying some excellent Bavarian hospitality at the event's gala dinner.

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to meet with us. Looking forward to turning those conversations into action over the months ahead.

How do you measure the real impact of AI in marketing?

The conversation is shifting from adoption to outcomes. How do organisations measure success? Which metrics matter most? And how can marketing leaders demonstrate the value AI is creating?

These are some of the themes that Maria Flowers (McKavanagh), Chief Revenue Officer at Joulen, will be exploring as a panellist at the TechTides conference in Belfast today.

🎤 Panel: Evaluating AI for Marketing: metrics, benchmarks, and proof points that matter
📍 TechTides | ICC Belfast | 1.50pm

Maria will share insights into how Joulen is using AI across marketing, and the lessons we've learned about balancing authenticity, innovation, performance, and business value.

Most organisations are approaching AI as a technology deployment challenge.
What if it's actually an organisational design challenge?

In Part 2 of his latest series, "Agents are Eating the Organisation", John Carroll, Chief Operating Officer at Joulen, explores why simply layering AI agents onto existing structures won't deliver the productivity gains many expect.

The article challenges a common assumption: technology alone doesn't transform performance. History shows that real breakthroughs happen when organisations redesign how work gets done to fully leverage new capabilities.

As AI agents move beyond individual productivity tools and become embedded in decision-making, workflows, and operations, leaders face a critical question:
Are we adapting our organisations to AI, or just asking AI to fit our existing organisations?

This week, Joulen’s COO, John Carroll, will be speaking at the Anchor High Summit by ManufacturingNI on Thursday, 28 May at Kingfisher Country Estate, Templepatrick.

In the session, Lead, Lean & Lift: Unlocking Productivity Across Business, John will explore themes from the first of his three-part thought leadership series, Agents Are Eating the Organisation.

The series examines a recurring pattern in business transformation: sustainable productivity gains rarely come from technology alone. Organisations that create lasting advantage are those willing to redesign how work is structured, how decisions are made, and how leadership operates around emerging capabilities.

From industrialisation and electrification to computing, every major technological shift has rewarded organisations prepared to rethink the operating model itself. Early evidence suggests agentic AI will be no different.
