In fact, summer is often a great time to carry out work, you can see the full canopy clearly, identify dead or crossing branches, and the tree has plenty of energy to recover.

Summer tree care myth | "You should top a tree to keep it small"

Topping, cutting the main stem or large branches back to stubs is one of the most damaging things you can do to a tree. It causes stress, leaves large wounds vulnerable to disease and decay, and often results in weak, fast-growing new growth that's more dangerous than what was there before.

It's not. Left unchecked, ivy can add significant weight to branches, trap moisture against the bark and ultimately weaken the structure of the tree over time. It also makes it much harder to spot early signs of disease or decay.
