When Tony and Claire Riccardi were planning their rural new build in Gilford, Co. Armagh, renewable heating made sense on paper, but making the switch from oil still felt like a big step.

With a young family, a larger home, and plenty of opinions involved in the build, they wanted confidence that the system would actually deliver on comfort, hot water and running costs.

Six months after moving in, there was no increase in energy bills, even though their new home was three times the size of their previous one. Their heating and hot water were working out at around £425 per year for a 3,000 sq ft new build. Something they were understandably delighted with!

They took a holistic approach to their build, researching all the key elements early in the planning stage, which in effect meant that Ryan stuck with them for the guts of 2½ years, continually convincing and reassuring them about ground source heat pumps, underfloor heating and mechanical heat recovery ventilation.

As Claire put it:

"Daly really had to convince us on the mechanical heat recovery system, but I am so glad we did it. I love the fact that we are bringing our boys up in such a healthy environment."

When designing renewable systems, one of the most useful things you can include in a home is a dedicated plant room.

Ideally, it should be centrally located and, where possible, on an outside wall. This gives you one dedicated space for key equipment such as the MHRV unit, solar PV inverter, battery, hot water cylinder, underfloor heating manifolds, control panels and consumer unit.

It can also help performance. For example, if the MHRV is positioned on an outside wall near the air source heat pump, the warm exhaust air leaving the house can go back into the air source heat pump, giving an extra efficiency benefit.

Without a proper plant room, equipment often ends up spread across utility rooms, hot presses and storage cupboards, which is far less practical.

A well-designed plant room makes life easier during the build, keeps the house more organised and makes annual servicing much more straightforward in the years ahead.

If you are planning a self-build or working on house plans, it is well worth thinking about this early.

Last week, Emma and Roger from our Business Development team were out and about exhibiting at the Greater Newry Sustainability Conference & Expo at the Canal Court Hotel & Spa♻️

It was a great event, with a strong turnout and plenty of useful discussion around the sustainability challenges and opportunities facing local businesses.

We are delighted to welcome back Fergus Fee to Daly Renewables as a Contracts Engineer👏👏👏

Fergus first joined us as a placement student during his BSc Energy degree at Ulster University, returning again after graduation before heading off to Canada for two years. After staying in touch, he reconnected with Ryan Daly on his return and has now joined the team once again.

Today, Fergus’s role involves a mix of site visits, client and contractor liaison, and technical design work, including plant layouts, MHRV, Solar PV and system drawings. It is a role that combines practical, on-site experience with detailed engineering and design work in the office.

And because no two homes are ever the same, the work is always varied, and he gets to work on homes in some fabulous locations around Northern Ireland.

Developing talent from within has become an important part of how we build our team at Daly Renewables, and it is always especially rewarding when former placement students choose to come back and continue their career with us.

A home can have the best renewable technology available, but if it is not airtight, it will never perform as well as it should ♻️🏡

A lot of the most important work happens in the small details you barely notice, around windows, junctions and connections like this one.

Get these right, and you create a home that feels warmer, more comfortable and easier to heat. Get them wrong, and heat escapes, energy is wasted, and the whole system has to work harder.

It is also not just about one product or one fix. Good airtightness comes from careful design, the right materials and making sure everything works together properly, from windows and insulation to ventilation and heating.

Looks like we’re getting a bit of good weather for the bank holiday weekend ☀️

So here’s something you might not know if you’re building or renovating…

Heat pumps don’t just heat your home. They can help cool it too.

This can be especially useful in newer, airtight homes or houses with lots of glass, where rooms can get very warm in summer.

Ground source heat pumps can offer free cooling, using the cooler temperature in the ground to help reduce indoor temperatures with very little energy use.

Air source heat pumps can cool too, but this is active cooling, so the system uses electricity to remove heat from the home.

It’s definitely worth thinking about early if you’re planning a new build, extension or retrofit.
