Elevations for a recently submitted Planning Application in Kings Road Conservation Area. Two-story side extension and internal alterations to add a kitchen/dining/living space and master suite to a handsome arts and crafts dwelling.

We’ve been talking in our team lately about making drawings of our projects that look like artworks in their own right… and Part 1 Beth couldn’t have done a better job of that. These quick studies allow us to worth through different options for materials and openings with our clients, and also in this case demonstrate how screened from the road by mature trees this extension will actually be.

Swipe to last image to see a beautiful old drawing of the original house, from the rear, by T McC Johnston Architect. Where we are adding expansive glazing, was always glazed.

Want to see more of this project? We’ll share some photorealistic renders later this week 💫

32 illustrated proposals for a town

Studio idir + Starling Start were commissioned by Mid Ulster District Council to lead the Cookstown Place Shaping Plan, translating community ideas into a set of tangible, testable possibilities.

From the research and engagement process, 32 proposals emerged, each reflecting a distinct opportunity for Cookstown’s future. Rather than impose a hierarchy, we designed each idea to stand on its own merit.

Working with Studio idir’s Hannah and Emma, every proposal was brought to life through a series of illustrations, creating a visual language that can be shared across ages and audiences, and used as a tool for discussion.

Can you spot anywhere you recognise?

Our pavilion at has been short listed for the regional awards and also the reinvented RSUA Awards, alongside excellent buildings by our talented friends and colleagues. Whoop!

To celebrate, here are a few extra shots by the brilliant of a little outdoor performance space, born out of true collaboration, that brings us and the school so much joy.

THE BARREL

Our client wanted to create a luxury glamping pod, for vineyards and distilleries, that was shaped like a barrel and could be split into sections to be transported anywhere in the world. A LOT of a constraints that lead to some interesting, technical, collaborative design conversations with our client, engineer and who are building the pods.

Which layout would YOU prefer to sip your whiskey from?! Bed in the middle, or against one side?

Studio idir is delighted to again support Simon Open Door this year. Bookings opened today for consultations from@13-19 April.

If you have a project, or even an idea, you’d like to discuss, you can book a consultation with Aisling, Katie and many other architects across Ireland, to take place (in our case online), in exchange for a donation to the Simon Community.

No idea too crazy, no place too far! We’re happy to hear from you and talk through possibilities.

A STORY - for International Women’s Day

In 2020, I (Aisling) was asked to write a chapter on women in architecture in Northern Ireland between 1965-2015. I politely declined, explaining that this wasn’t my area. A researcher, yes, but an architectural historian I am not!

A while later. I was approached again through someone else - they were still looking, and that’s when I realised…
Women in architecture in Northern Ireland was noone’s area of expertise! It’s not a topic anyone had made a particular point of researching. So I agreed to do it.
What followed were some fascinating conversations with people I knew and others I didn’t, reminiscing and sharing their stories. Turns out there have been many pioneering women in architecture from this wee place!*
*Including Florence Fulton Hobson (1881-1978), Ireland’s first woman architect.

Some were friends and colleagues I’d known or worked with over the years, who only when asked, quietly admitted the remarkable things they’d achieved…

Take, for example, Ruth Morrow , who became the first female professor of architecture on the island of Ireland (in 2003).

Or the first architect in Northern Ireland to be accredited by the RIBA as a Specialist Conservation Architect, in 2011 - namely Consarc’s brilliant Bronagh Lynch .

Then there’s Siobhan Brown, perhaps better known as a radio presenter and soul singer, Manukahunney, but who also developed NI’s first low-energy social housing in historic buildings, while working at Hearth, in 2007. .siobhan

These, and many others, weren’t just pioneering women architects, but pioneering architects, full stop, busy getting on with their trail-blazing careers. Not surprising, really - it took serious chutzpah for women architects to practice in what was at the time even more of a male-dominated industry.

Models don’t always have to be made from precious materials. We used our box for these and it really helped us and our lovely clients quickly work through different options.

Planning application submitted this week to create an artist studio and exhibition space for an artist and curator couple, to the rear of their listed terrace in South Belfast.

We can’t wait to see what they do with the space when it’s completed!
