Domestic PV and Battery Solution (Part 2)
What are the Benefits of PV Panels with Battery Storage
The financial outcome in 2024 tells only part of the story. There are multiple benefits to the combination of PV panels and domestic batteries:
1. Reduced Grid Consumption
2. Time Shifting of Energy Use
3. Reduced Carbon Emissions
4. Export Income
5. Resilience and Energy Awareness
6. COST

Domestic Electrical Production & Consumption 2024 ☀️🔋

Real performance data from a Northern Ireland home shows how combining rooftop solar PV with battery storage can dramatically reduce household electricity costs.

In 2024 our home generated 4,492 kWh of solar electricity from a 5.2 kW south facing PV array, exported over 2,000 kWh back to the grid, and reduced total annual electricity cost to just £107.75 after export income. The same electricity demand purchased entirely from the grid would have cost approximately £982, delivering a saving of £874 for the year.

The system works by using solar electricity directly when available, storing surplus generation in two 5 kWh domestic batteries, and strategically charging the batteries overnight on a lower tariff during winter months when solar production is reduced.

This case study demonstrates how well designed domestic renewable systems can deliver measurable financial savings, lower carbon emissions, and improved energy independence, even in the Northern Ireland climate.
