📐That the roof geometry is understood.

🔌That underground services follow the record.

Every assumption copied into another drawing becomes harder—and more expensive—to challenge.

𝗔 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

🤔That may sound obvious, but surveys can easily be reduced to deliverables: floor plans, elevations, sections, topographical drawings, point clouds, utility drawings or models.

Those outputs matter, but the real question is whether the information helps the project team make better decisions.

🏢For a building, that might mean supporting design, refurbishment, heritage work, space planning, asset records or stakeholder coordination.

🏗️For a site, it might mean understanding levels, features, boundaries, drainage, utilities, access and constraints.

🏙️For an estate, it might mean creating consistency across multiple buildings and future projects.

The value is not just in producing a drawing or dataset. The value is in producing information that people can rely on.

✅Check the scope, deliverables, proposed method, assumptions, exclusions, accuracy, control and whether site constraints have been properly considered.

✅Most importantly, check whether the quote reflects what the data will actually be used for.

This matters because the cheapest quote is not always the lowest-cost decision.

❌If the information is incomplete, unsuitable or unclear, the cost can appear later through redesign, delay, repeat work, poor coordination or stakeholder uncertainty.

✅A good survey quote should give confidence, not just a number.

✅It should show that the provider understands the project risk, the required outputs and the decisions the survey information needs to support.

That does not mean every project needs a huge survey package. It does not mean overcomplicating the scope. And it certainly does not mean spending money for the sake of it.

These questions are much easier to answer early.

The risk is not only whether utilities are present. The risk is whether the information is accurate enough, clear enough and reliable enough for the decisions being made from it.

That means the survey scope matters.

Detection, verification, quality, confidence, limitations and clear deliverables all need to be considered.

When utility information is treated as a simple pre-start requirement, important questions can be missed.

➡️What level of investigation is appropriate?
➡️What environment are we working in?
➡️What records are available?
➡️What access is possible?
➡️What confidence does the project need?
➡️How will the information be used?
