With a history of floristry in the family, Emily has always been inspired by horticulture and spending time outdoors. Since starting the studio in January 2023, work has grown organically across East Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. Most clients choose to work with Emily after seeing her previous work and are excited by her style and approach to designing gardens. Whilst the studio's main clientele

are homeowners and private individuals, we also collaborate with architects, developers, and landscapers on a range of services. We are members of the Association of Professional Landscapers, reassuring clients that we have been examined on the creative, technical and horticultural skills you would expect from a professional garden design studio. Our "one stop" approach to soft landscaping has also proved popular, suiting clients that want their existing hard landscaping to be softened and combined with appropriate, well designed planting. Emily and her team work on a range of exciting projects in East Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and further afield and we would be delighted to hear from you too.

Want flowers all summer long? 🌸

Then don’t skip this simple garden job: deadheading.

Deadheading is simply removing spent flowers once they’ve finished blooming. By doing this, you stop the plant from putting its energy into producing seed and encourage it to keep producing more flowers instead.

It only takes a few minutes, but the difference it makes is huge. More blooms, a tidier garden, and plants that keep performing right through summer.

If there’s one job you keep on top of this season, make it this one. It’s quick, easy, and one of the best ways to keep your borders looking fresh and full of colour for months.

Who’s heading out to do a bit of deadheading today? 🌿✨

The Truth About W**d Membrane: Helpful or Harmful? 🌱

For years, w**d membrane has been promoted as the ultimate solution for keeping gardens w**d-free. But does it actually work long-term?

While it can help suppress w**ds initially, it often creates new challenges over time.

- W**ds still appear as seeds land and germinate in debris and organic matter that accumulates on top of the membrane.

- It can limit the natural improvement of your soil by preventing organic matter from breaking down directly into the ground.

- Once w**ds become established through the fabric, they can be more difficult to remove.

- Many membranes eventually degrade, leaving plastic fragments in the soil.

We do use permeable textile membranes in some hard landscaping applications, such as beneath gravel paths and patios. However, in planting areas, healthy soil is key. Allowing the soil ecosystem to thrive will result in stronger plants, greater biodiversity, and a more resilient garden. 🌱

So what are the alternatives?

🌿 Thick Mulch
A generous layer of bark, woodchip, compost or leaf mould suppresses w**ds while improving soil health and retaining moisture.

🪨 Gravel Gardens
A properly prepared gravel garden with a deep layer of gravel can effectively reduce w**ds without relying on plastic barriers.

šŸ“¦ No-Dig Gardening
Layer cardboard over existing vegetation and cover with compost or mulch. The cardboard naturally decomposes while helping to suppress w**ds and build healthier soil.

🌱 Rather than aiming for a completely w**d-free garden, focus on creating healthy soil and dense planting that naturally reduces w**d pressure over time.

Do you use it, or have you switched to other methods?

A Sunday morning garden centre mooch? One of life’s simple pleasures

But before that plant makes it into your trolley, here are my top rules to follow:

ā˜€ļø Check the sunlight requirements – is it happy in full sun, shade or somewhere in between?

🌱 Know your soil – some plants are surprisingly fussy about where they put their roots.

šŸ“ Look at the eventual size – this is the big one. That cute little shrub could easily become a 3m monster in a few years’ time.

šŸ’Ø Consider the site – is it exposed to wind, coastal conditions, frost pockets or scorching afternoon sun? Can this plant cope with these conditions?

šŸ‘€ Inspect the plant itself – choose healthy specimens with lots of buds rather than those already covered in flowers. Avoid yellowing leaves, signs of stress or unwanted hitchhikers like aphids.

A few extra minutes in the garden centre can save a lot of disappointment later.

Now you’re ready to head for the till 🌿

What plant can you never resist bringing home?

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT 🌿

I’m delighted to welcome AnaĆÆs and Craig!

I’ve known them both for a long time, and they’ve always been two people I’ve really admired - not just for their work, but for the way they approach it. We share the same values when it comes to creating gardens that feel thoughtful, personal and built to last.

AnaĆÆs will be supporting me in the studio as well as taking on her own design clients. She’s a brilliant designer with a real gift for creating timeless gardens, and she cares so deeply about each project. It sounds obvious.. but in an age of ā€œinstant resultsā€, I believe taking time to get things right, with a human that really cares, gets the best results and longevity

We’re also working with Craig, who brings over 20 years of experience in landscaping, horticulture, gardening and turf management. Before this, he led teams building sports pitches all over the world, so there’s not much that fazes him! He has that golden combo of been an experienced hard landscaper with a real understanding of plants and horticulture. šŸ”ØšŸŒø

They’ve both already made such a positive impact and
I can’t wait to see what we create together next 🌱

That’s a wrap on my top garden design don’ts 🌿

This week I’ve covered some of the biggest mistakes I see again and again — from flat layouts and empty borders to not using enough planting or height.

And honestly?
These small design decisions are usually the difference between a garden that looks ā€œfineā€ā€¦
and one that actually feels immersive, balanced, and exciting to move through.

There’s still SO much more we could unpack when it comes to garden design, but hopefully this has given you a solid starting point and helped you see your own space a little differently

DON’T MAKE THIS MISTAKE
🌿 5 Garden Design Mistakes
#5 — No sense of scale šŸ“šŸŒæ

A garden can have beautiful planting, expensive materials, and lovely furniture…
but if the scale feels wrong?
The whole space feels uncomfortable — and you often can’t even explain why.

Scale is one of the most overlooked parts of garden design.

It’s about how the size of everything relates to:

* the house
* the garden itself
* and the people using it

🌿 Why this doesn’t work

When scale is off:

* Tiny borders disappear against large spaces
* Small paving slabs make gardens feel busy and fragmented
* Oversized features dominate the space
* Furniture feels cramped or lost
* And planting lacks impact because everything feels disconnected

The garden stops feeling balanced.

🌿 What to do instead

Think about the proportion of elements working together.

🌿 Make borders bigger than you think

* Most borders are far too shallow
* Deep planting instantly feels more luxurious and immersive
* Generous borders create proper layering and scale

🪵 Use fewer, larger materials

* Larger paving often makes spaces feel calmer and more expansive
* Bigger repeated elements create confidence and simplicity

🌳 Match planting to the size of the space

* Small gardens still need height and structure
* Large gardens need bold planting in meaningful quantities
* One tiny shrub in a huge border will always feel lost

🌾 Create scale through repetition

* Repeating plants, materials, and forms helps the eye understand the space
* It creates rhythm and visual confidence

šŸ” Relate the garden to the house

* The transition from house to garden should feel intentional
* A large house with tiny patio furniture and narrow borders will always feel disconnected

✨ In design terms:
Good scale is what makes a garden feel comfortable.

Not too busy.
Not too empty.
Not too small.
Not trying too hard.

Just balanced 🌿 If you haven’t already, comment DESIGN below and I’ll send you my free guide.

DON’T MAKE THIS MISTAKE

🌿 5 Garden Design Mistakes (Reel Series)
#4 — No height 🚫🌳

If everything in your garden sits at the same level…
the whole space falls flat.

One of the biggest mistakes in garden design is keeping everything low:
low planting, low fences, low furniture, low interest.

Because without height, there’s no drama.
No structure.
And nothing to pull your eye upwards through the space.

🌿 Why this doesn’t work

When everything stays low:

* The garden feels flat and one-dimensional
* Your eye scans across it instead of through it
* There’s no sense of scale or immersion
* And the space often feels smaller, not bigger

Ironically, adding height is usually what makes a garden feel more expansive.

āø»

🌿 What to do instead

Think in layers — from ground level right up into the sky.

🌳 Add small trees or multi-stems

* These instantly anchor a space
* Filter views beautifully
* And create canopy without needing a huge garden

🌾 Use tall planting

* Ornamental grasses
* Structural perennials
* Vertical forms like verbena, thalictrum, or eupatorium

These pull the eye upward and create movement through the border.

🌿 Train plants vertically

* Climbers on walls, arches, pergolas, or obelisks
* Green screens soften hard boundaries and add another planting layer

🪵 Bring structure upwards

* Pergolas
* Screens
* Raised elements
* Even tall pots or water features

Height doesn’t just come from plants.

✨ In design terms:
Great gardens work in three dimensions.

The magic happens when planting moves from:
🌱 ground layer
🌿 middle layer
🌳 canopy layer

Because once the eye starts travelling upwards as well as across…
the whole garden comes alive 🌿 If you haven’t already, comment DESIGN below and I’ll send you my free guide.
