You woke before your alarm. Outside, something was happening. Loud. Layered. Not one voice — dozens.

That was the dawn chorus.

Male birds defend their territory with the most intense song in the thirty minutes before first light and the first hour after sunrise. The air is cool and still — sound carries further at dawn than at any other time of day. Each species enters at a slightly different moment, determined by how well it can see in low light. The robin sees earliest and begins first. The wren and blackcap wait for enough light before joining, and carry the chorus to full volume.

May is peak dawn chorus month in Britain — the window when every pair is established, eggs are being incubated, and every male is singing at maximum effort. By mid-June, as nesting moves into the feeding phase, the chorus begins to thin. The full window lasts four to six weeks.

Set your alarm ten minutes earlier tomorrow. Open a window. Stay still in the dark. 🐦

Right. The sun is out. The garden is calling.

Now is the perfect time to get ahead of it before you actually want to use the space.

💦Jet wash the patio. A winter’s worth of algae and grime makes even a nice patio look tired, and it’s a slipping hazard too. One good blast and it’s transformed.
🌱Clear the borders while the weeds are still small and manageable, not knee high and seeded.
🪑Get the furniture out and check what needs a clean, a sand, or a lick of paint.
☘️Sort the edges. Nothing makes a lawn look more cared for than a clean edge.

Small jobs now mean you actually enjoy the garden when the good weather lands, instead of spending sunny weekends catching up.☀️

Yesterday was World Bee Day 🐝 And it feels like the right moment to say something about it. They are so important!

Bees pollinate around a third of everything we eat. Without them, our gardens, our crops and our food would look very different. And yet their numbers are declining.

The good news? Your garden can genuinely make a difference.

The top 3 plants to add right now that bees absolutely love:
🌿 Lavender. Bees see purple better than any other colour and lavender is one of their all-time favourites. Looks and smells incredible too.
🌿 Borage. Easy to grow, bright blue flowers and one of the most nectar-rich plants you can put in. Brilliant in raised beds.
🌿 Salvia. Long flowering season, packed with pollen. A brilliant all-rounder for any sunny spot.

Getting a LOT of messages asking about baskets… so here’s your update 🌸

They are coming along beautifully. Nearly there.

But I won’t be delivering until the frosts are properly clear. I know it’s tempting and I know you’re ready for them, but put a basket out too early and one cold night undoes everything.

I’d rather deliver them at the right time and have them go the distance all summer, than rush it and risk them.

Worth the wait. I promise.

Why a bespoke planter beats something off the shelf. Every time.

It actually fits your space! Shop bought comes in whatever size the factory decided on. A bespoke planter gets built around your garden, your wall, your awkward corner. No compromises, no “that’ll have to do.”

It lasts! Flatpack and plastic planters have a shelf life. A well built sleeper planter? That thing is going nowhere. Solid, sturdy and still looking great years down the line.

It looks like it belongs there! There’s a difference between something that was placed in a garden and something that was made for it. Bespoke means it looks intentional. Considered. Like you knew what you were doing all along. 😄
