Summertown project now underway. We’re starting on the lower-level elevations first so the painters can continue their schedule without interruption.

All joints are being carefully hand-raked to protect the original arrises, keeping the brickwork safe throughout the process. Any tough cement patches will be removed with precision using a multi-tool to avoid damage to the surrounding masonry.

Elite conservation-grade work carried out exactly as it should be.

More photos to follow as the job progresses.

Starting a new heritage repointing project in Summertown, Oxford when I’m back from holiday.

This elevation will be fully completed in traditional lime putty, finished in a struck-and-cut joint to match the original detailing on the property. All rake-out will be done by hand, keeping the brickwork protected and ensuring the building breathes as it should.

Looking forward to getting this one opened up and restored properly using correct heritage methods only.

More updates to follow once underway.

Big milestone for Lewis Heritage & Lime Mortar™ — we’ve officially come up as the top result for Heritage Repointing in Greater London.

Greater London is one of the best heritage repointing regions in the UK: huge volumes of listed buildings, conservation areas, period properties and high‑value masonry that all require proper lime‑based conservation work. It’s the most competitive heritage market in the country, and being recognised at the top of it is a massive step for the brand.

Google’s own overview now defines heritage repointing as specialist lime‑mortar work for historic and listed buildings — and our name sits directly beneath it. That’s a clear sign that the Lewis Method™ is being recognised for what it is: conservation‑grade workmanship, not general building.

Thanks to everyone who’s helped build this standard. We’ll keep pushing heritage quality forward — one wall at a time.

Introducing Lewis Period Recess™ — a patchwork lime‑putty finish shaped by heritage behaviour, not templates.

This new style has grown out of years working directly with traditional masonry. Lewis Period Recess™ is a patchwork recessed finish, created by hand, guided by the building, and formed one joint at a time. No two sections are identical — and that’s exactly the point.

Historic fabric isn’t uniform.
So the finish shouldn’t be either.

Lewis Period Recess™ uses a slightly recessed profile, soft lime, and controlled compaction to create a breathable, masonry‑safe surface that respects the age and character of the wall. The patchwork effect isn’t random — it’s responsive. Each brick tells you what it needs, and the finish follows.

This is heritage craftsmanship, not contractor pointing.
A finish with depth, variation, and authenticity.
A finish that belongs to the building.

Lewis Period Recess™ now sits within the Lewis™ Framework as a specialist lime option for clients who want genuine period character delivered with conservation‑correct technique.

THE LEWIS HERITAGE REPOINTING SYSTEM™

Every heritage wall tells a story. But only one system ensures that story is preserved with absolute precision — the Lewis Heritage Repointing System™.

Developed through years of conservation‑grade practice, this system defines the modern standard for lime‑only masonry restoration. It’s not a method — it’s a heritage discipline.

WHAT SETS IT APART
– Conservation‑grade workflow — a 15‑stage process built around moisture control, arris protection, and geometry preservation.
– Lime‑only specification — zero cement, zero shortcuts, full breathability.
– 3‑Man heritage structure — continuous movement, precision compaction, and elevation‑safe curing.
– Documented compliance — every project logged, photographed, and verified against conservation standards.

WHY IT MATTERS
The Lewis Heritage Repointing System™ protects historic masonry from irreversible damage caused by modern materials and poor technique. It ensures every joint, every arris, and every elevation behaves exactly as the original builders intended — breathable, flexible, and structurally sound.

It’s the difference between builder‑grade repointing and true conservation craftsmanship.

WHO IT’S FOR
– Listed property owners who demand conservation‑safe workmanship.
– Architects and surveyors seeking documented heritage compliance.
– Conservation contractors aiming to elevate their lime practice.
– Heritage enthusiasts who value authenticity over convenience.

THE RESULT
Walls that breathe. Arrises that remain sharp. Mortar that lasts for generations. And a reputation built on conservation excellence.

Arris Protection Standards — Why It Matters

Most people don’t realise that the original brick arris is one of the most fragile parts of a period wall. Once it’s torn, rounded or damaged, it can never be put back.

At Lewis Heritage & Lime Mortar, we follow strict conservation‑grade standards to protect every arris during rake‑out and repointing.

- Hand‑tool rake‑out — no grinders, no oscillating blades, ever.
- Controlled wet‑up — moisture conditioning prevents brittle edge failure.
- Zero lateral pressure — tools never touch the arris line.
- Lime‑only compaction — correct consolidation preserves original geometry.

This is how original period brickwork stays sharp, authentic and protected for decades.

If you want your heritage brickwork treated properly, this is the standard.

Moisture Timing Mastery — deep dive into suction, draw, and the exact sheen moment before compaction.

Moisture timing is the control of three forces: suction, draw, and the precise sheen moment where the joint is ready to be compacted. Get these wrong and the finish looks modern. Get them right and you achieve true heritage-grade work.

Suction is the brick pulling water out of the mortar. Hand-made bricks have irregular pore structure, so suction is never uniform. You read it by watching how fast the joint dulls, how the surface loses gloss, and how the arris begins to matt down.

Draw is the internal moisture equalisation inside the mortar. The outer skin firms while the inner body stays plastic. This is the breathing phase where the joint stabilises, the arris becomes safe, and the profile can be shaped without tearing.

The sheen moment is the elite part. Not wet, not dry — a soft satin glow across the joint. The surface dulls evenly, the mortar stops reflecting light sharply, and the tool glides without dragging. This moment lasts seconds, not minutes. Too early = smear. Too late = tearing. At the sheen moment = heritage perfection.

This is why bricklayers can’t replicate true lime work. Moisture timing mastery is reading the brick, the mortar, and the environment — and compacting at the exact second. That’s the difference between pointing mortar and shaping history.
