The clocks go back this Sunday, and from Monday evening it's dark by teatime.

That change is always when people start noticing their doors properly again. You come home in the dark, the porch light is on, and suddenly you feel every niggle you ignored over the bright summer: a door that won't close flush unless you give it a hip, a handle that's gone stiff, a key that needs a jiggle.

Doors get used harder in the dark months too. Coming and going in the evening, wet weather swelling things up, cold making everything stiffer, so anything that was borderline in October tends to give up by January.

The clock-change weekend is the natural moment to give each door a quick once-over: key turns smoothly, handle lifts cleanly, closes without a fight. Anything that fights back is usually a small fix now rather than a bigger one mid-winter.

Lock change for customer after having issues with a lock

October is the month wooden doors start to swell. After this much rain and damp, a door that closed fine all summer can suddenly need a shoulder to shut it.

What catches people out is assuming the lock has broken. More often the lock is fine and it's the door that has moved: the timber has expanded, the lock and the keep no longer line up, and the key starts to feel stiff or won't turn all the way.

Worth knowing: if the lock works freely with the door open but binds when it's closed, that points to the door rather than the lock. And it's never worth forcing the key, because a stiff lock is exactly how keys end up snapping.

The fix is usually a small one. An adjustment to the hinges or the keep brings everything back in line, and on a wooden door it can be worth easing the edge where it's binding, so it doesn't come back with the next spell of wet weather.

Lock change in Langdon Hills this afternoon. Key had snapped in the lock and although key extraction was possible customer opted for a new higher quality lock. I also cut them an extra key while onsite

Door alignment in Hullbridge this morning, neither of these doors were locking. Adjusted both doors and now both are operating and locking smoothly as they should with no parts required.

If your door has started to drop, autumn is usually when you notice.

Composite and uPVC doors are heavier than people expect, and a little extra weight on the hinges can pull the door out of line. It often shows as a door that catches on the frame or needs a shove to lock. Autumn weather highlights the problem, but a door that has dropped rarely fixes itself, and a lock that's not lining up puts extra strain on the mechanism every time you use it.

• Door catching or scraping on the frame
• Lock feeling tight and needing a lift to lock
• Door dropping slightly out of alignment
• Hinge adjustment to bring the door back in line

A hinge adjustment is often a quick job for a locksmith, and it protects the lock and mechanism from wear caused by a door that's out of line. It's also worth checking hinges on other doors in the home while the weather stays mild.
