That’s another job completed, everything’s taking a bit longer than expected as it’s either been raining or a heatwave and it’s played havoc with my schedule 😂

Full rake out and repoint on this job along with extensive brick replacements

Repointed in my own made on site, slaked quick lime mortar

This section of home can now breath again as originally intended and the brick corrosion can finally stop 🙌🙌

Right, onto the next job, full house repoint !

All things considered this is a relatively quick and small job compared to a full house repoint, but it’s come at a time when this wall really is on its knees 😞

The inappropriate cement pointing may of already fallen out long ago but sadly the damage had already been done

To bring this wall back to life and to start breathing again as originally intended I shall be doing

A full rake out
Brick replacements
Full repoint using my owned mixed ‘slaked’ quicklime mortar

Wow 😮 What a big project this has been 🙌

I was given the privilege of being able to help care for this 1608 built home and a project that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working on

As you can see in the before photos this property looked absolutely amazing but was in need of traditional maintenance to help bring it back to life

List of jobs included …

🧼 Gentle Stone Cleaning: Safely cleared away hundreds of years of dark atmospheric staining, moss, and algae to reveal the beautiful, warm, natural honey tones of the historic limestone.

🔨 Cement Removal: Carefully chipped out years of inappropriate, hard modern cement and failing mortar that was trapping moisture inside the walls and putting the stone at risk of cracking.

🧪 Traditional Lime Putty Repointing: Fully repointed both elevations using a custom, non-hydraulic fat lime putty mortar that I slaked and mixed entirely on-site using carefully selected sands.

🖌️ Authentic Finish: Finished the joints exclusively with a traditional churn brush to compress the mortar, open up its pore structure, and maximize the breathability of the wall.By using traditional, breathable materials and time-honored methods, this historic home can finally breathe, shed moisture naturally, and look its absolute best.

🏡There are absolutely no shortcuts when it comes to historic stone buildings. To get this exterior looking right—and breathing right—we did things the traditional way:

Stone by Stone: Every single stone was cleaned individually by hand 🙌

🔨 Out with the Bad: We raked out all the inappropriate modern cement and failing old mortar.

🔥 Traditional Hot-Mixed Lime: We slaked quicklime on-site to create a custom lime putty, blending it with carefully selected sands to recreate a historically accurate mortar.

🖌️ The Perfect Finish: Once initial carbonation took place, the joints were scraped, shaped, and carefully bashed with a churn brush to open up the lime and ensure it’s fully loaded into the joints.

The natural warmth of the stone is back, and the building is protected for decades to come.

Real heritage work takes time, patience, and the right materials, but the results speak for themselves!🛠️

Going going going … gone !

That’s the gable end now fully raked out and ready for repointing in a traditional hot lime mortar

Just the very bottom section to rake out but I will leave that until I’ve pointed in the top section 🙌

Gentle cleaning of the stone along the way has really brought out the limestone again and it looks incredible, this 420 year home is being brought back to life 🙌

The difference really is night and day 😃
