Not the biggest room, so everything in it had to earn its place. A few of the choices are worth explaining.

The shower set is chrome/white. The vanity, tap, waste, accessories and screen upright are all matt black.

That wasnā€™t an accident. Black looks great where it stays dry and gets wiped down, but sat in a wet zone with the water weā€™ve got round here it starts picking up limescale within weeks. Weā€™ve seen it on a full black scheme three months after we handed it over.

So chrome goes where the water is, and black goes everywhere else.

The shower is a white electric unit. Itā€™s not the fanciest thing on the list but it was the right call. It suited the supply, it suited the budget, and itā€™s a solid reliable bit of kit. It also freed up money to spend where you actually see it. The marble effect feature wall, the recessed niche, the concealed cistern.

The WC is concealed next to a good sized vanity so the floor stays clear and the room feels bigger than it is.

Thatā€™s how we do it. Spec a room for how it looks in ten years, not how it looks in a photo on day one.

Hereā€™s a shower room we were recently called to after the client noticed damp walls, cracked tiles and paint blowing on a bathroom only around three years old.

What was initially thought to be a leaking towel rail valve turned out to be much more once we opened things up.

We found issues with the shower tray installation, waste, wall preparation and tiling. The majority of the shower area had to be stripped back, the tray properly supported, walls reboarded and everything rebuilt correctly.

While we were there, we also sorted a stubborn toilet blockage that had been causing problems for a long time, replaced the bath panel, and installed a new basin, taps and shower screen.

One thing we always say: donā€™t cut corners on bathroom installation. Whatā€™s underneath the tiles is just as important as the finish you can see.

This is what was behind the tiles.

A bathroom that looked fine on the surface. Underneath, years of water ingress from the old shower had rotted the studwork and turned the insulation black. Youā€™d never have known until it came off.

So we did it properly: stripped back to the frame, replaced the damaged timbers, fully tanked and sealed the wet areas, and rebuilt from there.

Then came the interesting part, making an awkward loft room work. The eaves eat a lot of usable space, so rather than lose it we built the storage into the slope: a full-height cupboard following the roofline exactly, with shaker doors cut to the angle so they sit completely flush with the wall. Slatted airing shelves and a radiator built in behind them, so it earns its keep as well as looking the part.

Natalieā€™s choice of tiles finished it beautifully - warm stone with a textured feature wall that lifts the whole room. And she was a joy to work with: we put design ideas and options to her throughout, she trusted us to run with them, and this is the result. That trust is what lets a job like this become what it should be.

Another day, another one weā€™ve come across.

This was hiding under a bathroom that looked perfectly fine on the surface. Waste pipes packed in expanding foam, buried in the dirt, mould creeping through the timber. Three years old.

This is what we keep uncovering, and itā€™s exactly why we strip things back and do them properly.

Whatā€™s the real cost of a cheap bathroom?

This is a live project of ours. When we stripped it out, we found the worst mould Iā€™ve seen in a bathroom in all my years in this trade.

The original installation had been leaking behind the tiles for years. No proper waterproofing. No protection for the timber. Just tiles over the top and hope for the best.

The client had been complaining that mould was affecting her young children. Thatā€™s not a cosmetic problem mould exposure is a genuine health risk, especially for kids.

Swipe through: photos 1ā€“3 are what we found. Photos 4 onwards are our first fix every stud replaced where needed, cement board throughout, fully tanked and waterproofed before a single tile goes on. The stuff youā€™ll never see once itā€™s finished, but the stuff that actually matters.

When the cheapest quote wins, this is where the savings come from. You just donā€™t find out for a few years.
