Just a steady liner drop in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Mansfield.

Nothing flashy. No drama. Just a proper look at how a chimney liner installation unfolds from the rooftop.

These are the sorts of jobs people rarely get to see, but they're a huge part of chimney and roofing work. Getting a liner safely down an existing chimney isn't always as straightforward as people imagine, especially when you're working at height and dealing with older properties.

I talk through the process as the job progresses and give a bit of insight into what's actually involved behind the scenes.

Can a roofer drop a chimney liner if they aren't HETAS registered? The process is complex. When installers connect to liners dropped without care, the liability can fall back on them. To avoid potential issues and ensure safety, it's often best to handle the entire process yourself.

When you’re carrying tools, materials, and trying to access awkward parts of a building, one of the biggest challenges is simply having enough reach and enough capacity to do the job safely and efficiently.
That’s exactly what I was chatting about with Mark at Promax Access. Out of the two machines we were comparing, the 2095 just offers that bit more — more reach, more capability, and a full 250kg anywhere in the envelope. For anyone doing building maintenance, chimney repairs, or anything where you’re hauling kit up with you, that extra capacity makes a massive difference.
Yes, it’s around 500kg heavier, coming in at roughly 2.9 tonnes depending on configuration. But even with the lithium version, they balance that out elsewhere, so the real-world difference isn’t as dramatic as it sounds.
For the type of work I’m doing, the extra capability wins every time.

People think I take Hannah with me on filming trips for moral support.

The truth is far less impressive.

Apparently, I can't be trusted to put a hard hat on without supervision. 😂

This clip is proof that even after years of working at height, operating cherry pickers and crawling around roofs, I still occasionally find myself defeated by a few tangled straps.

Good job I brought backup.

You’ve probably noticed I’m wearing blue gloves during this job — and there’s a very good reason for that.
This stuff does not come off your skin. Soap and water won’t touch it, so gloves are essential.
That said, with the best will in the world, I really should’ve worn long sleeves as well… because my arms are absolutely caked in it.
I should know better by now. This isn’t the first time I’ve used this product, and it definitely won’t be the last. Will I wear long sleeves next time?
I’d like to say yes… but history suggests otherwise.

Every machine design involves compromise.

You can make something lighter.
You can make it cheaper.
You can make it faster to build.

But sooner or later, something has to give.

One thing that stood out to me while looking at the CMC S20 was where they choose not to compromise.

Build quality.

There are always engineering decisions to make when designing a spider lift, but CMC seem determined to ensure that the machine still feels robust, well-built and engineered for the long term.

In this clip, I talk about why that matters and why some compromises are worth making, while others simply aren't.

First job: dry it out.
Out comes the blowtorch, followed by a hybrid polymer sealant and adhesive.
Not glamorous work by any stretch — but very effective.
Once that was sorted, it was time to replace a missing cast iron downpipe feeding into the hopper.
Swung-neck bend offered up, iron pipe lifted into place, holes drilled, rawl plugs in, and everything fixed back neatly where it should be.
Simple jobs, done properly.

How do you remove a chimney without covering the customer's garden, roof and driveway in bricks?

This was my plan.

Rather than throwing debris around or carrying it down by hand, I set up a chute running from the cherry picker down to the ground, allowing the bricks to be removed in a controlled and efficient way.

Before starting a job, I spend a lot of time thinking about the safest and most practical way to carry it out. Sometimes the planning is just as important as the demolition itself.

This clip shows the idea and the setup before the real work begins.

Would you do it differently?

I was sent the Defender Jaws solar panel bird excluders by Defender Bird Spikes to install on my own home and review for my audience.

No script. No sales pitch. Just my honest experience fitting them and my thoughts on the product after getting hands-on with it.

In this video, I take you through the installation process, explain what I like, what I think could be improved, and whether I'd actually recommend them for keeping pigeons and other birds out from underneath solar panels.

If you've got solar panels and are fed up with the mess, noise, and damage caused by nesting birds, this one might be worth a watch.

You can get your own Defender Jaws solar panel bird excluders from Bird Spikes Online:

Have you protected your solar panels from birds yet, or are the pigeons currently winning?
