🐝 Know your visitors 🪰

Our gardens depend on a huge variety of bees, wasps and hornets, each playing a distinct role in pollination and pest control that keeps ecosystems in balance.

Species such as the Bumble Bee, Honey Bee and Red Mason Bee are responsible for pollinating much of the fruit, vegetables and wildflowers we rely on, while wasps like the Common Wasp and German Wasp help control populations of aphids, caterpillars and other garden pests.

Many of these insects face serious pressure from habitat loss, pesticide use and changing weather patterns, with several solitary bee species in particular declining sharply across the UK in recent decades.

The European Hornet remains our only native hornet and, despite its size, is far less aggressive than commonly believed, playing a valuable role in the ecosystem.

The Asian Hornet is a different matter entirely. As an invasive species with no natural predators here, it poses a direct threat to honeybee colonies and native pollinators, and any suspected sighting should be reported through the Asian Hornet Watch app or to the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

Honeybees! 🐝

You may see them landing and trying to fly again. They are exhausted after working very hard. Give them time to recover or move onto a patch of garden or a flower and keep children and pets away.

If you have a swarm cluster of them, they most likely will move on in a day or two to find a permanent home and if they do not, then at that point you can seek further advice from us.
