53% of CFOs now own digital transformation in their organisation. 42% are responsible for capital allocation. 40% oversee risk management.

The CFO role hasn't just expanded. It has fundamentally changed in nature.

Wolters Kluwer's 2026 Future Ready CFO Report — a survey of 1,672 finance leaders — describes it clearly: the CFO has moved from scorekeeper to performance orchestrator.

And for UK finance leaders, the ambition is even higher than the global average:

· 63% of UK CFOs identify finance transformation as a strategic priority — vs 52% globally

· 90% want to co-lead digital transformation initiatives

· 93% place greater emphasis on continuous learning than their global peers

But here's the tension nobody talks about enough.

The orchestrator role only works if the finance function around you has evolved at the same pace.

27% of CFOs cite resistance to change as their biggest barrier. Only 46% report healthy tension in their leadership teams. Just 40% say they have sufficient debate.

Ambition without the right team is aspiration — not transformation.

This week's newsletter explores what the shift really demands, where most finance functions are falling short, and five questions every CFO should be asking right now.

If you're applying for an accountancy job, you must be prepared for the interview to make a good impression on the employer. You must avoid common mistakes that can hurt your chances of getting the job. Here are the most common mistakes to avoid:

Not preparing for the interview: Research the company and job description and prepare answers to interview questions. Understand the company culture, vision, and values.

Dressing inappropriately: Dress professionally, even for video interviews, to show that you are taking the interview seriously.

Talking about the wrong things: Avoid discussing salary or criticising former employers or colleagues. Focus on why you are the right fit for the job.

Being late: Plan your route and arrive early or on time. If you are taking a video interview, check your software and hardware in advance.

Poor body language: Sit up straight, maintain eye contact, and don't check your phone during the interview. Practice with friends to improve your body language.

Not listening properly: Pay attention and stay engaged throughout the interview. Ask questions if you need clarification, but don't ask your hiring manager to repeat themselves constantly.

Accountancy and Finance candidates are in high demand due to skill shortages, offering more job opportunities and flexible work arrangements. However, finding the right company to join requires careful consideration. Researching potential employers and aligning them with your career goals is crucial for making informed decisions.

Before starting your job search, define your career path and the specific roles you are interested in. Working with an accountancy and finance recruitment company can help you create an effective plan and match you with suitable companies.

There are five signs of a fantastic company to consider. First, shared values are essential, so research a company's mission and vision to ensure alignment with your own values. Second, company culture plays a vital role, so look for positive work environments and recognition programs. Third, opportunities for growth and learning are crucial, so seek companies that invest in training and offer room for advancement. Fourth, consider the benefits beyond salary, such as flexible work arrangements and additional perks. Finally, evaluate the leadership team's qualities through website information and interviews to ensure a supportive and inspiring work environment.

By considering these factors and conducting thorough research, accountancy and finance candidates can increase their chances of finding the ideal company that aligns with their career goals and values.
