πŸ’” Plant Myth Thursday πŸ’”
Exotic plants thrive in humid rooms, and higher maintenance plants as maranthas or calateas need a real lot of air moisture. People who don't want to invest in high end equipment or don't want to take up too much space with clumsy humidyfiers start misting their plants. But that's a big mistake! Misting barely raise your rooms' humidity levels. Nonetheless, this creates perfect conditions for fungus to grow on your beloved plants' leaves. Who'd want that? Better group your plants together to create local microenvironments or place pebble trays instead of pot saucers.

The single best thing you could provide your plants must be stability. Plants love consistent watering that meets their needs. For eg., piece lilies like slightly moist soil for most of their time. You'd slow your lilies growth pace down by letting it dry out too much in between waterings. Trying to learn your plants needs and sticking to it's own schedule will help you create a mesmerizing collection

One of the best ways to check soil moisture is sticking a wooden stick in it. If stick looks wet and with bits of soil - your plant still has plenty of water in it's pot :) how deep you should test soil depends on a pot size. About 5cm is optimal for a smaller or medium size pot. You should dig deeper for a bigger pot as it has more space to store wet soil.

Pots with drainage holes are suitable for bottom watering. That's a plant watering technique where you water your plants into saucer instead of top soil or submerge pot into water container for a short period of time. Bottom watering has a couple benefits:
🌿 prevents overwatering - the most efficient way to bottom water plants is giving as much water as 2/3 of bottom soil would absorb. Less wet soil means that water is gonna evaporate quicker, preventing root rot.
🌿 helps combat pests - since most plant pests lay eggs in top soil levels, they greatly depend on top soil moisture. If you bottom water correctly, you're going to have your top soil levels on a dryer side and pests cannot hatch their eggs as successfully.

Make sure you thing thoroughly about your plant's placement in a room. They like growing at a single spot because plants adjust to every little change. New place takes plant about 2-3 weeks to adapt to new growing conditions: lighting and humidity. Adjusting your decor once every half a year or so will do little harm, but make sure you don't carry your plant around your house all the time. Switching a spot too often will cause plant a lot of stress and it may even die!

Terracotta pots - that's the best thing you can provide for your plant babies! These are unglazed clay pots, typically brownish red colour and with a single drainage hole and the very bottom. The best part about terracotta pots is that they're porous, which means a lot of air for plant's roots and water evaporating from all over the pot, not only its top soil layer. Terracotta helps with developing strong and healthy root system, prevents overwatering.

πŸ’” Plant Myth Thursday πŸ’”
Let's discuss a common plant care myth people often continue to do in their plant routine. Gravel in pots! It's believed that putting a couple centimeters of gravel at the bottom of a pot improves soil drainage, but that's a myth. Gravel only takes up much needed soil space your roots would use otherwise. Gravel even lifts water level up, cause now the wet part of soil is closer to plant's roots :O The two best things you can do to improve soil drainage is 1. invest in pots with drainage holes and 2. increase soil drainage level by mixing in a little bit of sand and perlite. Your plants will surely thank you with lots of new growth! 😊
