Concept design - St Joseph the Worker Church ✨

Developed at early concept stage several years ago, this proposal explored how architecture could reflect the clients values of simplicity, humility, and quiet intimacy. The scheme was structured around a radial worship space, expressed externally, and formed in local limestone and timber to create a calm, light-filled interior focused on the altar. High-level glazing and carefully modulated daylight were used to shape atmosphere and orientation.

We’re pleased to share some visuals from an ongoing project within a Grade II listed building in south-west Birmingham.

The scheme introduces finely detailed stainless steel glazing within the existing arches, creating acoustic separation while allowing the spaces to remain visually connected and adaptable. In parallel, we are developing a new linking intervention and reimagined internal spaces across the building. More to follow!

We’re pleased to have reached practical completion on the new purpose-built vicarage for Holy Trinity Church Birchfield in Handsworth, Birmingham. Delivered in collaboration with the Church of England, the project provides a more sustainable home with a highly insulated envelope and carefully considered technologies to reduce environmental impact.

Designed with longevity and warmth in mind, the building features buff brickwork complemented by pebble-grey aluminium finishes. Carefully framed views connect the interiors to the serene surroundings, while solid oak finishes bring warmth, grain, and a tactile softness to the spaces.

A project in development since 2018, it’s great to see it realised, with future plans to repurpose the existing vicarage for community use.

This week at The Old Bank, APEC had the honor of welcoming Duncan Cadbury, former Chair of Bournville Village Trust to the practice.

He shared captivating stories about George Cadbury and Bournville’s 200-year legacy of chocolate, philanthropy, and architecture. It was inspiring to learn how the Cadbury family’s influence goes well beyond the estate, impacting education, healthcare, and communities throughout Birmingham.

A special thanks to retired architect Harry Harper for joining us and sharing his memories! We’re proud to be part of this remarkable community and its rich history. And of course, there was plenty of Cadbury chocolate to enjoy! 🍫

Exciting changes are coming to Martineau Gardens! 🌿 APEC Architects are designing a new staff & volunteer building with dedicated education and community spaces. Replacing the long-outdated Mollie Martineau Building, the new space will reflect the Gardens’ warm, inclusive spirit - shaped through deep, community engagement. The scheme is heading into RIBA Stage 4 - keep an eye out to see how it progresses.

Here is a visual encapsulating some of the above details.

This past weekend, APEC proudly hosted Bournville Heritage Open Day, welcoming nearly 900 visitors through our doors!

It was wonderful to share the history of Bournville with the wider community and to hear the engaging conversations about The Old Bank building and the surrounding area.

A big thank you to Part 1 Birmingham City University students, Studio Zine, and University of Birmingham Geography students for their fantastic contributions throughout the day.

We’re especially grateful to all of our volunteers who helped make the event a success.

We look forward to seeing you again next year!
