⚠️ EICR FOLLOW-UP – FAILED DUE TO SAFETY ISSUE ⚠️

Following on from our recent EICR on this 2-year-old property, we unfortunately had to issue a FAILED report ❌

The reason? No main earth bonding to the incoming gas supply.

As you can see in the photos 👇, testing confirmed there was no effective earth connection to the gas pipework — something that is absolutely essential for safety.

🔍 Why is gas bonding so important?
Main protective bonding helps prevent dangerous voltages from appearing on metal pipework in the event of a fault. Without it, there’s a real risk of electric shock ⚡

🚫 Even in newer homes, this is something we’re still finding — and it’s a clear example of why an EICR is so important, regardless of the property’s age.

✅ The good news: this is something that can be rectified quickly and brought up to standard with the correct installation of bonding conductors.

If you’re unsure whether your property is properly bonded or due an inspection, don’t leave it to chance.

⚡ EICR on a 2-Year-Old Property – Not Always As Straightforward As You Think!

Carried out an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) today on a property that’s only 2 years old… and it just goes to show, age doesn’t always equal perfection 👀

This home was fitted with a split-load consumer unit, rather than a full RCBO board. While compliant at the time of installation, this setup can have its drawbacks:

🔸 Reduced fault isolation – one fault can take out multiple circuits
🔸 More inconvenience for homeowners
🔸 Not in line with the latest best practices under the current regulations

👉 At Nick Clarke Electrical Ltd, we stopped installing split-load boards around 3 years ago, moving over to RCBO consumer units as standard. This gives each circuit its own protection, improving safety and minimising disruption if a fault occurs.

During the EICR, we thoroughly inspected and tested the installation to ensure everything remains safe and suitable for continued use 🧪

💡 Why have an EICR, even on newer homes?
Electrical installations can still develop faults, deterioration, or may not meet the latest standards. Regular checks help keep your property safe and avoid unexpected issues.

If you’re unsure about the condition of your electrics – new or old – it’s always worth getting them checked ✅

⚡ Is Your Home Electrically Safe? ⚡

At Nick Clarke Electrical Ltd, we always recommend regular EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Reports) to keep your home safe and compliant.

🏡 What is an EICR?

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is a full inspection of your property’s electrical system. We check wiring, fuse boards, sockets, and overall safety to make sure everything is working as it should.

🔍 The Process:

✔️ Visual inspection of electrical installations
✔️ Testing circuits and components
✔️ Identifying wear, damage, or potential hazards
✔️ Providing a detailed report with clear recommendations

⚠️ Why is it Important?

• Prevents electrical fires and shocks
• Identifies hidden faults before they become dangerous
• Essential for landlords and recommended every 5–10 years for homeowners
• Ensures your installation meets current safety standards

📋 After the inspection, you’ll receive a report graded with:

✅ Satisfactory – Safe for continued use
❌ Unsatisfactory – Improvements required for safety

Don’t wait for a problem to arise—peace of mind starts with prevention.

⚠️🔥 Don’t ignore strange smells! 🔌⚡

This week we attended a call out to a after some staff reported a strong “fishy” smell.

On investigation, the issue turned out to be a 16amp plug and socket with a loose connection, which had started to overheat and melt.

This type of smell is a common warning sign of overheating electrical components and should never be ignored, as it can pose a serious fire risk, especially in commercial environments.

The fault was safely isolated and made safe by replacing both parts with no return visit required.

If you ever notice unusual smells coming from sockets, plugs, or electrical equipment, get it checked immediately.

🚨 Emergency Call-Out Completed 🚨
We were called out to investigate a crackling sound coming from a fuseboard – something that should never be ignored.
The fault was traced to a loose live cable in one of the RCBOs. The issue was made safe, the connection secured, and full testing carried out to ensure everything is now operating correctly and safely.
⚠️ If you hear buzzing or crackling, or notice burning smells from your consumer unit, turn the power off (if safe to do so) and call a qualified electrician immediately.

📋 EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) Success Story This Week ⚡️

While carrying out an EICR for one of our customers this week, we discovered a high earth fault loop impedance reading. As this can indicate a problem with the incoming supply, we advised the customer to contact their DNO (District Network Operator) by calling 105.

The DNO attended promptly and identified a fault on the supply cable feeding the customer’s property. All neighbouring properties were unaffected, confirming it was an isolated issue.

The best part? The DNO are now planning to repair or replace the cable at no cost to our customer. 🙌

This is a great reminder of why regular electrical inspections are so important — hidden faults like this can easily go unnoticed.

If you need an EICR or have concerns about your electrical installation, feel free to get in touch!

⚡️ Is Your Fuseboard Keeping You Safe?

Many homes across the UK still have old-style fuseboards with wire fuses or no RCD protection. While they may still “work”, they don’t offer the same level of safety as modern boards.

💡 Here’s why upgrading your fuseboard is worth it:
✅ Improved safety: Modern RCBO or RCD fuseboards automatically cut power if they detect a fault or shock risk — protecting you and your family.
✅ Better reliability: No more fiddling with fuse wire! Faults can be reset quickly with a simple switch.
✅ Compliance: If you’re renovating, renting out your property, or having an electrical inspection, an upgraded fuseboard helps ensure you meet current electrical safety standards.
✅ Peace of mind: Know your home is protected from the risk of electrical fires and shocks.

If you’re unsure what type of fuseboard you have, we’re happy to take a look and give you honest advice — no pressure, no sales talk.
