🏛️ Could extra court resources mean fewer delays for landlords?

The Ministry of Justice has announced a major recruitment drive, with 1,000 new roles across the courts and tribunals service, backed by £77 million of investment over the next two years.

For landlords, this could be particularly welcome news. A better-resourced court system should help to:

• Reduce delays in possession claims
• Speed up the resolution of disputes
• Tackle existing court backlogs
• Create a more efficient and reliable process when court action is necessary

With the rental sector continuing to undergo significant change, having a court system equipped to deal with demand will be increasingly important for both landlords and tenants.

🏠 HOUSING SUPPORT & YOUR RENT — WHAT’S REALLY HAPPENING?

With the cost of renting continuing to put pressure on household budgets, there’s an important conversation taking place around Local Housing Allowance (LHA) and the support available to renters.

The NRLA is calling for LHA to be re-linked to at least the lowest 30% of local rents, arguing that housing support needs to better reflect the reality of today's rental market.

And this matters. Research highlighted by the NRLA shows that fewer than 3 in every 100 private rented properties in England are currently affordable to people receiving housing benefit.

Making Tax Digital: Is your property business ready?

The first Making Tax Digital (MTD) quarterly reporting deadline is fast approaching, with the first submission due by 7th August for landlords affected by the new rules.

If your property business earns £50,000 or more per year, you'll now need to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software.

Key points to remember:
• First quarterly submission deadline: 7th August
• Keep digital records of rental income and expenses
• Submit quarterly updates through HMRC-approved software
• Your tax payment dates stay the same – only the reporting process changes

The new rules will gradually be extended to landlords with lower rental incomes over the coming years, so now is a great time to understand what Making Tax Digital means for you.
