Coogan Architects were commissioned to renovate and extend this traditional sandstone detached property in the conservation area of Kirkintilloch.

The footprint of the house was extended to the rear by way of new contemporary dormers at first-floor level and a new single-storey extension at ground floor level, providing open-plan living with connections to the rear garden.

A contemporary monochrome palette of materials includes grey aluminium window and bi-folding door frames, zinc cladding and smooth white render.

Single storey rear extension to detached Category B Listed blonde sandstone villa in a Glasgow South Side Conservation Area.

Our design approach was to create a building which co-exists harmoniously with the existing house yet has contemporary features and materials.

The low-pitch zinc-clad roof is supported on an exposed galvanised steel frame. By ensuring no structural loads are taken down through the walls, this has allowed us to introduce a bespoke, frameless clerestory glazing system which, internally, gives the impression of a floating roof. This is further emphasised by cantilevering the roof to one side.

The result is a truly spectacular light-filled room with uninterrupted views and strengthened connections to the garden.

A grey-blue brick and zinc roof extension, coupled with a series of internal alterations, allowed for the creation of this new open-plan kitchen, dining and informal living space. Connections to the new landscaped garden were strengthened with bifolding doors, large windows and glass balcony.

An unused stone gable wall became the perfect back drop for this contemporary zinc and white render house extension. The monopitched form presented an opportunity for oversized glazing and dramatic volumes.
