We don’t sell patios.

Well, technically we do — but a patio on its own isn't the reason somebody invests in their garden.

What they're really looking for is somewhere to sit with a morning coffee. Somewhere for lunch on a sunny afternoon. Somewhere to entertain friends, spend time with family or simply sit quietly and enjoy the garden.

The paving, lawn, planting and seating all have a purpose — but good garden design is about bringing those individual elements together to create a place that feels good to be in.

Because you're not really buying paving, plants or a lawn.

How to Choose a Landscaper – Part 1

Can They Provide a Portfolio of Their Work?

Anyone can tell you they're a great landscaper.

Look beyond the beautifully edited photographs and ask yourself:

✔️ Is there a variety of projects, or do all the gardens look the same?
✔️ Can you see close-up details that demonstrate the quality of the craftsmanship?
✔️ Are there before-and-after images showing the transformation?
✔️ Does the style match the type of garden you're hoping to create?
✔️ Can they demonstrate projects of a similar size and complexity to yours?

A strong portfolio isn't just about beautiful finished gardens. It should demonstrate experience, consistency and the ability to solve different design challenges.

The right landscaper should be proud to show you their work—because it's the strongest evidence of what they can achieve for you.

🌿 RESIN PATHWAYS — THE PROS AND CONS

Resin-bound surfacing can look fantastic in a garden, but like every landscaping material, it isn't the right choice for every project.

The advantages?

✓ Smooth, seamless appearance
✓ Excellent for curves and flowing pathways
✓ Permeable when installed as part of a correctly specified permeable system
✓ Wide choice of aggregate colours and textures
✓ Comfortable underfoot and useful where accessibility matters
✓ Relatively low maintenance
✓ Works particularly well alongside contrasting stone or block edging

And the disadvantages?

– The quality of the installation is critical
– Poor preparation or an unsuitable base can cause problems later
– Repairs can be difficult to disguise seamlessly
– Lighter aggregates may show staining and discolouration more readily
– It doesn't suit the character of every property or garden
– A good-quality installation isn't necessarily a cheap surfacing option

At Kirman Design, we don't believe in choosing a material simply because it's fashionable.

We consider how the garden will be used, the character of the property, drainage, accessibility, maintenance and the overall design before deciding what belongs there.

Because good garden design isn't about finding the best material.

It's about choosing the right material for the right garden.

One of Britain's most famous gardens shouldn't exist.

When artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman created his remarkable gravel garden at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent, he wasn't working with rich soil or ideal growing conditions.

He was working with shingle, salt-laden winds, drought and one of the harshest coastal environments in Britain.

Instead of trying to change the landscape, Jarman embraced it. He used gravel as both a growing medium and a design feature, selecting resilient plants that could thrive in the conditions. The result is one of the UK's most celebrated gardens—a place of beauty, texture and resilience that continues to inspire gardeners and designers around the world.

There's an important lesson in that.

Great garden design isn't about imposing an idea onto a space. It's about understanding the site, respecting its conditions and choosing the right materials and planting to make the most of them.

At Kirman Design, every project begins in exactly the same way. We look at the soil, the aspect, drainage, architecture and the way our clients want to use their garden before a single line is drawn.

Because the best gardens don't fight nature...

They work in harmony with it.

Good landscaping isn’t just about what you use. It’s about how you use it.

Individual granite setts are relatively simple materials. But introduce geometry, repetition and careful setting-out, and they become something completely different.

Here, the paving has been laid in sweeping radial patterns, allowing the hard landscaping to flow around the planting rather than simply filling the space between it.

And that takes planning.

Every curve affects the next. Every joint needs to follow the geometry. Get the setting-out wrong at the beginning and the errors become increasingly obvious as the pattern develops.

The result is a driveway that isn’t simply somewhere to park the car. The paving becomes part of the garden design itself, with the strong geometry of the stone contrasting against the looser, architectural planting.

Sometimes craftsmanship is most noticeable when you stand back and see how everything fits together.

💧 GOOD DRAINAGE SHOULDN’T BE AN AFTERTHOUGHT.

Some of the most important elements in a garden are the ones designed to quietly do their job.

Threshold and linear drains allow surface water to be collected exactly where it's needed, helping protect buildings and paved areas while creating a clean transition between different surfaces.

But drainage isn't simply about putting a channel in the ground.

Levels, falls, water flow, paving layout and the position of the drain all need to be considered as part of the design from the beginning.

And, as this detail shows, something functional doesn't necessarily have to be unattractive.

Choosing the right materials and integrating drainage into the paving design can turn an engineering necessity into a deliberate architectural detail.

Good garden design considers where the water goes — before the rain arrives.
