Preserving the character of Fairhaven Lake Visitor Centre with the right roofing solution.

We're currently on site at Fairhaven Lake Visitor Centre in St. Anne's, carrying out remedial roofing works to the rear extension after it became apparent the original roof had been constructed at too shallow a pitch for traditional slate roof coverings.

The challenge was to provide a long-term, watertight solution while maintaining the original slate finish to keep the extension in keeping with the existing building.

To achieve this, we've stripped the existing roof back and reverted to a proven traditional low-pitch roofing specification:

• Installation of 18mm plywood decking.
• Counter-battening to create the correct drainage and ventilation detail.
• Full encapsulation with a high-performance bitumen felt system.
• Finished with the original slates, delivering the character of the slate roof with a system designed specifically for low-pitch applications.

At SHS Roofing Contractors, we believe every roofing solution should be tailored to the building, not forced to fit an unsuitable specification. By combining traditional craftsmanship with the correct modern roofing methods, we're ensuring this visitor centre benefits from both lasting weather protection and an appearance that complements its surroundings.

We're looking forward to sharing the completed project soon.

Another Quality Roofing Project Completed ✔️

We're pleased to have completed another full re-roofing project, delivering a durable, high-quality roofing system that will provide long-term performance and protection.

Our scope of works included the complete strip and replacement of the existing roof covering, installing new Crest concrete roof tiles throughout, finished with a dry ridge system to improve ventilation, weather resistance and provide a maintenance-free ridge solution.

As with every project, careful attention was paid to every stage of the installation—from preparing the roof structure and installing the underlay and battens, through to the precise laying of the roof tiles and finishing details. It's this attention to detail and commitment to quality that ensures every roof we complete is built to last.

The GRP dormer cladding shown in the photographs was completed by the main contractor and falls outside of our scope of works. With the roofing now complete, the project is ready for the next phase of construction, allowing the main contractor to carry out the final external finishes and bring this impressive home to completion.

A great effort from everyone involved, and we're proud to have delivered another roof to the highest standard.

If you're planning a new build, extension or roof replacement and are looking for experienced roofing specialists, we'd be happy to discuss your project.

We're excited to be starting our latest roofing project at St. Catherine's Church.

This is a specialist heritage roofing project that requires careful planning and attention to detail. We'll be working closely with the local authorities and ecologists, as bats have been identified within the roof. Every stone will be removed carefully and methodically, allowing any bats to be safely relocated before work continues.

The roof will then be rebuilt using a bat-friendly roofing felt and new battens before the original stone is reinstated. We'll also be installing all new leadwork to ensure the roof is protected for many years to come.

Projects like this are a great reminder that roofing isn't just about replacing materials—it's about preserving historic buildings while protecting the wildlife that calls them home.

We're looking forward to sharing the progress with you over the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

⛪ St. John's Church.

Work starts at St. John's Church as we tackle another important stage of the roofing works.

This section of the roof is being carefully stripped back to the parapet wall, allowing us to install new lead soakers and ensure the flashing is correctly integrated into the coping stone.

This is a critical detail in achieving a long-lasting, watertight finish while respecting the historic fabric of the building.

We have four of these parapet details to complete across the church. Once finished, these works will play a major role in making the building fully watertight and protecting it for many years to come.

It's always rewarding to see traditional roofing techniques and heritage craftsmanship coming together to safeguard such an important local landmark.

🏗️ Project Update – St Anne’s

The scaffold is now going up on our latest roofing project in St Anne’s, with a full tented scaffold being erected to provide complete weather protection throughout the works.

This substantial project will include:

✔️ Removal and reinstatement of the existing slate roof covering
✔️ Renewal of all lead valleys
✔️ Thermal upgrade and re-covering of the rear flat roof
✔️ Renewal of all lead gutters.
✔️ Close coordination with the main contractor delivering the wider building refurbishment works

The temporary roof structure will allow work to continue safely and efficiently while protecting both the building and workforce during the refurbishment.

We're looking forward to working alongside the main contractor and delivering another high-quality roofing project.

More updates to follow as work progresses.

Emergency call-out at the Grand Hotel, Scarborough 🚧

Following recent storms, we were contacted to assist with a serious safety issue—loose debris falling from the roof of this iconic building.

Due to the height and complex access requirements, this was no straightforward job. Working alongside specialist access equipment, our team safely reached the pinnacles on each corner of the roof to remove all unstable materials and make the structure secure for the future.

A challenging project, but one we’re proud to have delivered safely and efficiently.

🏔️ Project Completion – Grasmere, Lake District

We’re proud to showcase the completion of a challenging re-roofing project in the heart of Grasmere, within the Lake District.

Undertaken during one of the wettest seasons we’ve experienced, this project demanded careful planning, resilience, and precision at every stage. Working alongside the main contractor, the existing roof was fully stripped back to allow for a comprehensive insulation upgrade using wood fibre insulation installed both between and over the rafters.

Our team then carried out the full re-roofing package, including:
• Installation of a high-performance breathable felt membrane
• Counter-battening and battening to ensure correct airflow and fixing
• Reinstatement of the original diminishing Westmorland green slate
• Traditional lead hip detailing
• Upgrade of the lead-lined valley using Code 6 lead
• Installation of a full Nicholson Air Track ventilation system
• A full dry ridge system to improve ventilation and overall thermal performance

Despite the weather challenges throughout the winter period, the end result speaks for itself. This project is a testament to the skill, patience, and dedication of our team—delivering both performance and a finish that complements the character of the property.

📸 The final result made every challenge along the way worthwhile.

Our team recently carried out a comprehensive roof survey at Anfield Primary School 🏫
Using a combination of drone technology and cherry picker access, we were able to safely and efficiently assess every area of the roof.

🔍 Our survey included:
• Identifying defects and areas of concern
• Assessing the overall condition of the roofing system
• Capturing detailed photographic evidence
• Compiling a full condition report for the client
This approach allows us to deliver accurate, thorough results while minimising disruption on site — especially important in environments like schools.
Another professional survey completed and a detailed report delivered to our client ✅

We’re proud to share progress on our latest project at the Masonic Hall in Morecambe.

Our team is currently undertaking extensive leadwork to the valleys and gutters as part of a new extension, ensuring long-term durability and high-quality finishes throughout. Alongside this, we are installing a warm roof system to the flat roof area.

At this stage, the vapour control layer (VCL) has been completed and is now ready for insulation. This will be followed by a separation layer and a liquid polyurethane finish, delivering a seamless and weather-resistant surface. To complete the system, an aluminium coping will be installed around the perimeter for a clean, professional finish.

Great to see this project taking shape — more updates to follow as work progresses.
