Consumer unit upgrade completed for a customer today.

The property had undergone an EICR by another contractor who deemed it to be unsatisfactory due to absence of 30mA RCD protection.

They now have a fully loaded 18th edition metallic RCBO board and the property is now fully compliant for private rental purposes.

A recent job on a 15Kw electric ducted warm air system.

The customer had complained of an electrical burning smell coming from the unit and upon arrival, there was obvious heat damage to the front of the unit.

Closer inspection revealed that the connector blocks inside the unit had all but completely burnt away due to a loose connection - These units pull around 65 amps of current and it doesn’t take long for a loose connection and a high resistance joint to become extremely hot.

I managed to cut out the damaged section of cable, through crimp a new piece on and fit heat shrink insulation over the connection. The damaged terminals were replaced for new ones and terminals securely tightened. I managed to clean most of the soot from the front of the unit and carry out a thorough inspection for any further damage caused. Luckily this one was caught just in time and was repairable, it will now provide heat for many years to come.

Remember - Lose wires, cause fires 🔥
