The Groundlings Theatre in Portsmouth has a fascinating history that stretches back more than 240 years, long before it became the community theatre known today.

18th Century Origins (1784)

The building was originally constructed in 1784 as The Beneficial School, a charitable institution designed to educate poor children in the Portsea area of Portsmouth.

Key features of the original building:
• A large assembly hall used for public meetings, concerts, and social gatherings
• Schoolrooms for local children
• A venue for community events in the growing naval city

Because of this hall, the building quickly became an important social and cultural centre for Portsea.

I was asked to refurbish the 40 windows to the building which we have just finished taking 18 months.
Replacing all the Perspex with new glass over 500 pains.
What an amazing job it’s been working on such a historic building.

Replaced 320 panes of glass and may sashes plus all new cords fraught proofing and catches.
