🌲❄️ How to Take Care of Trees in Snowy Weather ❄️🌲
Snow and freezing temperatures can put real stress on trees, especially young or newly planted ones. A little winter care can go a long way towards keeping them healthy and preventing long-term damage.
1️⃣ Remove heavy snow safely
If snow builds up on branches, it can cause them to bend or snap under the weight. Use a broom or long-handled brush to gently sweep snow off — always brushing upward. Never shake branches or try to knock ice off, as frozen wood becomes brittle and can break easily.
2️⃣ Protect the roots with mulch
Roots are often more vulnerable than the branches. Apply a 5–10 cm layer of mulch (wood chips, bark, or leaf mould) around the base of the tree to insulate the soil and regulate temperature. Keep mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk to prevent rot and pests.
3️⃣ Water before the ground freezes
If there has been little rainfall and the soil is dry, give trees a deep watering before a hard freeze. Moist soil holds heat better than dry soil and helps prevent roots from drying out over winter.
4️⃣ Avoid salt damage
Road and pavement salt can burn roots and damage bark. Try to keep de-icing salts away from tree bases, and consider using sand or pet-safe alternatives where possible.
5️⃣ Protect young and vulnerable trees
Young trees, thin-barked species, or evergreens may benefit from extra protection such as tree wraps, windbreaks, or hessian to reduce frost cracking and winter burn.
6️⃣ Prune only when necessary
Avoid heavy pruning in winter unless a branch is damaged or dangerous. Pruning at the wrong time can expose trees to disease or further stress.
❄️ Caring for trees in winter helps them conserve energy, avoid damage, and grow back stronger in spring — protecting both your landscape and the environment.
