Most standard MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) are considered bidirectional or non-polarized, meaning they can safely handle power flow in either direction. They typically lack markings for "line" or "load," allowing supply to be connected to either set of terminals without sacrificing safety. However, this does not apply to all, as some specialized devices are unidirectional.

How to Identify: Bidirectional MCBs usually lack specific terminal markings (e.g., no "1" or "2", "In" or "Out").
Safety Check: If an MCB, RCD, or RCBO is marked with "Line" and "Load" or arrows, it is generally unidirectional.
Solar/PV Systems: While many standard MCBs are fine for PV, it is crucial to verify with the manufacturer, as renewable energy systems sometimes require specific bi-directional protection devices to ensure proper arc extinguishing.
Difference with RCBOs: While many MCBs are inherently bidirectional, this is not always true for RCBOs (Residual Current Breaker with Overload), which often require specific bi-directional models.

Always consult the product datasheet to confirm its suitability for bi-directional application (e.g., in a PV or battery system).

Do Solar panels save you money on your electric bills.
Case study for a commercial property I’ve done electrical work for many years.
The property has day and night rate meter.
Property open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 5.00pm Saturday 8.00 am to 12.00 midday.
Sunday closed.
From customer bills
12 months from 2020 to 2021
Total usage 111,400 kWh
For 2021 to 2022
Total usage 111,684 kWh
For 2022 to 2023
Total usage 119,096 kWh
The factory had all lights changed to low energy LED lights over a period of eight months between 2023 and 2024, and a 50 kW Solar PV system installed and commissioned in July 2024.
Total usage had dropped to 78,562 kWh for the same twelve-month period.
For 2024 to 2025 for the same period the usage now is 43,798 kWh.
Myself and the business owner have worked very closely together to reduce the reliance on the National Grid and reduce energy bills.
The expected payback period would be between three to four years.

Setting out on how to install solar panels to a roof.

The solar panels we shall install are REC alpha Pure Black on Black 410-watt, size 1730 mm H 1118mm W
Number of panels to be installed 4 with two rows of two panels in portrait.
Roofing rafters are 500 mm centres normally 600mm.

Our working garage roof.

Measure the width, 3 meters.

Measure the height from guttering to ridge, 4 meters.

Two panels in height equals 3.46 meters and 2 panels width equals 2.236 meters.

It’s best to position the panels in the middle of the roof and you need to leave space to each edges the bottom and top. The maximum distance between brackets should be no more than 1200mm and the rail to cantilever no more than 300mm. We only need three roofing brackets per rail.

Remove the fifth tile up the roof to expose the roof rafters near the middle of the roof.

I mark the rafter with a marker to show the rafter edges.

Fix bracket to rafter with 2 x 80mm long stainless-steel screws as required by manufacturer’s instructions.

I use only adjustable brackets on all my installations so you tighten the nut and bolt with the bracket not touching the tile.

Place the tile over the bracket and make where the bracket is located, turn the tile over and mark where to grind out.

Make several vertical slots with a grinder, use PPE ear defenders and eye protection.

Grind out the marked section.

Insert tile back into roof making sure it’s sits down flush.

Complete the other two brackets for this row.

Install the rail and tighten left hand side nut and bolt first then right-hand side and then the middle one, make sure the brackets are not resting on the roof and the rail is straight.

Going up the roof and using the same rafters count three tiles and remove the fourth one and fix the next bracket, do the same for the other brackets as before.

Fix the rail to these brackets, measure from the edge of the roof so the rails are in the same position.

Count up two tiles and remove the third tile and do the same.

Count up three tiles and remove the fourth tile and do the same as before.

The top tile and second on from the top can’t be removed unless the ridge tiles are removed.

With all four rails in place, you need to set the top rail and tighten up all the nuns and bolts.

We use the Solmetric sun eye 210 meter for expected solar generation this shows us what shading if any will impact the solar panels.

We have solar panels on both East and West facing roofs so some shading from its own roof and the property next door will cause a loss of solar generation. Expected solar enartion should be included on any solar PV quotation.

To get the solar panels to line up you need to string line between the top rail and bottom rail so the middle rails line up and then tightens up the fixing nuts and bolts.

Installing the solar panels start at the top with the mid clamp in the middle of the rail, this will give you the same over hang each side.

Cables should be cable tied to the rails so water doesn’t get in to the MC4 connectors.

Install the other top solar panel and tighten up all mid and end clamps.

Install bottom two solar panels lining them up with the top solar panels.

Andrew Lovelace next solar PV and battery storage road show will be held at Cammack’s furniture store Wide Bargate Boston.
Date, 28th June 2025
Time, Saturday all day from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
Lovelace Electrical has already installed three solar PV and battery storage systems to the shop with one system on each floor. These systems can be seen fully working.
Lovelace Electrical only install quality products for the customers piece of mind.
Come along and have a no hard sell chat about how we can save you money on your electric and gas bills by installing a solar PV system.
Systems start from £3000 for six panels with either a Solis of Fox inverter, these six panels could generate up to 2400 kWh per year and IF all this solar generation is used within the property it could save you £648.00 per year (2400 kWh @ £0.27 per kWh day rate).
I can do group chats or if you want to sit down for a private chat just let me know.
Information about this event will be on display in Cammack main window very soon along with REC solar panel booklets and Duracell Hybrid inverter and storage batteries leaflets.
