Are you at work? Do the plugs in your work place have PAT testing stickers on them? Are they in date? If not then you should remind your manager that the main acts and regulations which have a bearing on portable appliance safety are:
• The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
• The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
• Electricity at Work Regulations1989
• The Provision of Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)
• HSE INDG107 – Maintaining Portable Electrical Equipment

Each of these contains provisions which stipulate that non-compliance is a
criminal offence and set out the penalties for such offences. The penalties on
conviction include fines, imprisonment or both. Those with managerial
responsibility, as well as the corporate body, may be prosecuted.

HSE served three Prohibition Notices on a Newcastle car wash to stop use of dangerous electrical systems and one of the appliances.
HSE inspector Ash Ali said: “The electrical system we found at the car wash was extremely poor and could have resulted in someone being seriously injured or killed.”

Officers from the North East Regional Specialist Operations Unit (NERSOU) are asking residents and city centre visitors to be vigilant after the owner of a Newcastle car wash, who employed four illegal workers, has been served a prohibition notice.
