Avalonian Gardens is partnered with Steve Jennings Gardening, and specialise in grounds around 5 acres in size. We have a good range of high quality tools and experience to manage your estate throughout the seasons. We cover pests and diseases, plant divisions and propagation, lawn care, all manner of pruning, irrigation, mulching and other useful things such as construction of affordable compost

bays from pallets. We can make plant recommendations based on environment and soil types, and facilitate the creation of new garden beds. To that end, we can handle garden design, though for large scale works we highly recommend award winning Sebastian Jans Garden Design. With our partners we can also offer high quality fencing and small landscaping projects. Certified RHS Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture, further training through Grayshaw and Yeo and the experience of voluntary work at Kew Gardens - Avalonian Gardens provides competitive rates and a friendly service with a personal touch.

Erigeron karvinskianus - a great self seeder for cracks. Quite an adaptable and rewarding plant. I have historically enjoyed letting it bunch up into a shrub like form which can be trimmed to shape.

This Malus (Crab Apple) has suffered from leaf spot in previous years, but has responded well to applications of liquid seaweed feed, rewarding us with an impressive display of flowers.

Liquid seaweed is particularly useful as it supplies a broad range of micronutrients and trace elements that are often lacking in standard fertilisers. In the absence of significant macronutrient content, it functions primarily as a biostimulant—supporting plant health rather than directly feeding it.

Biostimulants contain naturally occurring compounds such as auxins and cytokinins, which promote root development, improve nutrient uptake, and strengthen the plant’s interaction with the surrounding soil biology.

By contrast, while synthetic fertilisers are effective at supplying nutrients, overreliance on them—particularly without organic inputs—can lead to reduced soil biological activity and structure over time.

Pay: £15.50-£21.00 per hour / £33,325-£45,000 per annum, depending on experience and relevant qualifications.

Job Description:

Experienced / Qualified Gardener

We are an established garden maintenance business primarily working on recurring domestic properties of medium to large size, with our largest site covering approximately 18 acres. Most work comes directly from our own client base via the Gardeners’ Guild, with occasional collaboration with garden designers leading to soft landscaping projects.

The work provides exposure to a wide range of horticultural techniques across well-stocked gardens. Where appropriate, surplus herbaceous divisions are available and staff are welcome to take these home.

Our work is varied and includes:

High-quality garden maintenance
Lawn care
Soft landscaping
Irrigation installation
Chainsaw work
Pressure washing
General handyman tasks
Pruning fruit trees
Treating Pests & Diseases
Various horticultural techniques - Chelsea chop, hampton hack, hardwood cuttings etc.

We are a small, tight operation where growth is incremental and deliberate, with a strong focus on quality, reliability, and professional standards.

Gardeners are responsible for maintaining an organised vehicle setup and ensuring tools and equipment are prepared appropriately for each day’s work.

The role includes maintaining clear work notes using Google Calendar and shared documents so that task lists accurately reflect changes between visits. Pesticide records are maintained through our app where applicable.

Training is provided as part of the role, including periodic seasonal refreshers covering horticultural techniques, safety practices, and equipment use.

Applicants should have solid practical gardening experience and be comfortable completing routine maintenance tasks to a high standard without constant supervision. There's a prerequisite to not only be able to identify plants, but to have a decent working knowledge of them. Relevant qualifications such as RHS Level 2, spray certification, first aid, chainsaw tickets, team-leading experience, or similar practical credentials are desirable. Experience in fencing or hard landscaping is welcome but not essential.

Requirements

Strong physical fitness and stamina
Basic literacy and numeracy
Reliability and punctuality
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Comfortable working at height (ladders, etc.)
Comfortable working outdoors in typical seasonal conditions
