Here’s what not to do with a smoke alarm…

Apparently it “kept going off when I was cooking”, so the solution was to tape over the sensor. 🤦🏻‍♂️

If your cooking is setting the smoke alarm off that often… maybe work on the cooking instead! 😂

A little bit of good news to share! 🎉

I’ve recently passed my Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems qualification.

As heating technology continues to evolve, it’s important that I keep my knowledge up to date so I can offer the best advice and solutions to my customers.

This qualification has given me a deeper understanding of how modern heating systems can be designed and set up to run more efficiently. Whether it’s a traditional boiler or the growing number of low-temperature systems, getting the design and controls right can improve comfort, reduce energy use and help keep running costs down.

I’m a big believer that learning never stops, and I’m looking forward to putting this new knowledge into practice.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Rusford Heating Ltd. Your trust allows me to keep investing in training and provide the best service I can.

Today I was at college continuing my professional development, and one lesson really stood out.

It’s easy to assume that if two products claim to do the same job, they’ll perform in much the same way. Today’s demonstration proved that isn’t always true.

It was a great reminder that when choosing equipment, it’s worth looking beyond the price tag. Performance, efficiency and reliability are often what provide the best value over the lifetime of the product.

This is one of the reasons engineers continue to train throughout their careers. We get to see first-hand how different products perform in real-world conditions, not just what’s written on the box or in the brochure. It means that when I recommend a particular product, it’s not because it’s the most expensive or because I have a favourite brand—it’s because I believe it offers the best balance of performance, reliability and value for money.

Sometimes trusting your engineer’s recommendation can save you money, hassle and disappointment in the long run.

Today’s work included:
🔥 Installing two stylish new radiators.
⚠️ Condemning one boiler that was unsafe to use.
✅ Repairing another unsafe boiler and getting it safely back up and running.

One of the less enjoyable parts of being a Gas Safe engineer is having to tell someone their boiler can’t be left in service. It’s never news anyone wants to hear, but safety has to come first.

Thankfully, not every unsafe appliance needs replacing. In another property today, I was able to diagnose the fault, carry out the necessary repair and leave the customer with a boiler that was safe to use once again.

No two days are ever the same, and that’s one of the things I enjoy most about the job.

If you’re worried your boiler isn’t quite right, don’t ignore the warning signs. It’s always better to have it checked sooner rather than later.

Another busy day at Rusford Heating Ltd. 🔧

Today’s jobs included:
✅ Replacing a 55kg radiator (my back definitely knew about that one!)
✅ Two landlord gas safety certificates
✅ Three boiler services

One job also highlighted an important reminder. The customer had an electric oven with the outer door glass smashed. The heat escaping from the front of the oven had caused visible heat damage to the kitchen unit next to it.

If your oven door glass is cracked or smashed, don’t keep using it. It can allow excessive heat to escape, damage surrounding units and, in some cases, create a safety risk. It’s always best to have it repaired or replaced before using it again.

Every day is different in this job, and sometimes it’s the things you weren’t called out for that end up being the most important!

It’s been another busy week so far, with plenty of boiler breakdowns and repairs—many caused by boilers that haven’t been serviced or maintained regularly.

I’m also spending a couple of days at college this week, continuing my professional development to keep my knowledge and skills up to date. Ongoing training means I can provide the best possible service for my customers and stay current with the latest heating technologies.

If your boiler is due a service or isn’t performing as it should, feel free to get in touch.

A busy day at Rusford Heating Ltd today! 🔧

Today’s jobs included working on two boilers, replacing a faulty central heating circulation pump, and carrying out radiator checks to help keep heating systems running efficiently.

We also repaired a leaking bath overflow by replacing the washer and resealing the connection to stop the leak.

A mixture of heating and plumbing work, with the aim of keeping our customers’ homes warm, safe and problem-free.

Whether you need a boiler service, repair, heating system diagnostics, or help with a plumbing issue, feel free to get in touch.

Today’s work included a boiler that was suffering from “kettling” — a loud banging/rumbling noise when running.

In this case, the cause was scale buildup inside the heat exchanger, restricting water flow and causing localised overheating.

When that happens, water doesn’t circulate properly, it starts to boil in pockets inside the exchanger, and you get that kettle-like noise.

Left unchecked, it can reduce efficiency and eventually lead to damage.

In cases like this, a chemical clean and system treatment can help restore performance and reduce the chance of it returning.

Regular servicing helps pick these issues up early before they become expensive repairs.

Three boiler services completed yesterday. 🔧

Not every job involves a dramatic breakdown or a major installation. Sometimes it’s simply about keeping things running safely and efficiently.

Regular servicing helps identify wear and tear before it becomes a costly repair, keeps boilers operating as the manufacturer intended, and is often required to maintain warranty cover.

If your boiler hasn’t been serviced in the last 12 months, now is a good time to get it booked in before the colder weather returns.
