🔍 IS LASER CLEANING RIGHT FOR YOUR PROJECT?

Laser cleaning is an incredible technology, but here’s something we believe is important to say:

It isn’t the right solution for every job.

At Lightwork, we’re not interested in convincing you that a laser is the answer if another process would give you a better, faster or more cost-effective result.

Instead, before requesting a quote, try our quick 30-second self-assessment 👇

ANSWER YES OR NO:

1️⃣ Is the item valuable, difficult or expensive to replace?

2️⃣ Do you want to preserve the original surface underneath the contamination?

3️⃣ Are you looking to remove paint, surface corrosion, oxidation, carbon deposits, graffiti, coatings or other surface contamination?

4️⃣ Is the contamination light to moderate, localised, or in an area where precision is important?

5️⃣ Is the quality of the finish more important than simply choosing the cheapest cleaning method?

6️⃣ Will the item need restoring, inspecting, repairing, repainting or recoating after cleaning?

7️⃣ Could aggressive blasting, grinding, sanding or chemical stripping potentially damage the surface or reduce the value of the item?

YOUR RESULT 👇

🟢 6–7 YES answers
Your project could be an excellent candidate for laser cleaning.

🟠 4–5 YES answers
Laser cleaning may be suitable. Photos and a suitability assessment would be the next step.

🟡 2–3 YES answers
Laser cleaning may still work, but another process could potentially be faster or more cost-effective.

🔴 0–1 YES answers
Laser cleaning may not be the best solution for your project — and we’ll happily tell you that.

WHERE CAN LASER CLEANING HELP?

🚗 Automotive & classic vehicle restoration
✈️ Aviation & aerospace
⚙️ Engineering & manufacturing
🏭 Industrial maintenance
🏛️ Heritage & restoration projects
🚜 Agricultural machinery
⚓ Marine equipment
🏗️ Construction & structural work
🎨 Graffiti removal
🔧 Tooling, moulds and precision components
🪵 Selected wood and restoration projects
🧱 Selected stone and architectural surfaces

THE IMPORTANT BIT 👇

Laser cleaning is not magic.

It cannot replace missing metal.
It cannot repair deep corrosion damage.
It cannot always compete with blasting on large, heavily contaminated areas.

What it can do exceptionally well is remove selected surface contamination with an extremely high degree of control — particularly where preserving the underlying material matters.

At Lightwork, we would rather tell you “this isn’t a laser job” than take your money for a process that doesn’t deliver genuine value.

📸 Have a project in mind? Send us some photos, tell us what the item is made from and what you want removed — and we’ll give you an honest assessment.

A huge thank you to everyone who follows and supports Lightwork ❤️

We’re a small family business trying to build something a little different. Laser cleaning and surface restoration is still a very niche industry in the UK, and in many ways we’re helping to create awareness of a service that many people simply don’t yet know exists.

Every like, follow, comment and share genuinely makes a difference to a small business like ours. If you enjoy seeing what we do, please help us spread the word by sharing our page and website far and wide.

You never know who might have the perfect project waiting to be discovered! ⚡

Today was all about precision, patience and tuning in the laser to get the very best results. ⚡️🪵

We were working on an incredible piece of approximately 400-year-old oak, carefully removing three different types of paint and coatings that had been applied over its lifetime.

This wasn’t a case of simply turning the laser up and blasting away! Each coating reacts differently, so we worked methodically through our settings — adjusting parameters and testing small areas to find the sweet spot where the paint is removed effectively while protecting the historic oak beneath.

Some of the coatings also presented additional challenges due to their flammability, making controlled testing, careful monitoring and the correct safety procedures absolutely essential.

The aim is always the same:

✨ Remove the unwanted coating
✨ Preserve as much of the original material as possible
✨ Achieve a consistent finish
✨ Use the minimum effective energy required

Watching centuries-old oak gradually reappear from beneath layers of modern and historic coatings is exactly why we love what we do.

Every surface is different. Every coating is different. That’s why we don’t guess — we test, tune and work methodically.

Have you got an unusual restoration project that you think laser cleaning could help with? Send us some pictures — we’d love to see it!

👉 Follow and share our page to see more unusual projects, experiments and transformations as we push the boundaries of what laser cleaning can restore.

✈️ GUESS WHERE WE’VE BEEN TODAY… 👀

Here’s a clue…

Aircraft. Aluminium. Coatings. And some seriously interesting surfaces. 😏

Any guesses?

👇 THE ANSWER: DUXFORD AIRFIELD!

Today we’ve been exploring the potential for laser surface cleaning within the aviation industry — particularly the controlled removal of paint, coatings and contaminants from aluminium and other aircraft components.

And this is where it gets really interesting…

🔬 Remove coatings to expose the surface beneath
✈️ Prepare aluminium structures for inspection and restoration
🛠️ Remove paint, corrosion products and contaminants
🔎 Expose cracks, defects and surface damage hidden beneath coatings
🎨 Prepare surfaces for repainting and refinishing
⚙️ Clean components without abrasive blasting or aggressive mechanical methods

Laser cleaning allows us to work with a high degree of control, selectively removing unwanted material while minimising impact on the underlying substrate.

For aircraft owners, restorers, engineers, maintenance companies and aviation specialists, that can open up some very interesting possibilities.

And we’re not just talking about historic aircraft.

We’re looking at applications across the UK aviation sector — including private aircraft, general aviation, aircraft restoration, charter operators, engineering companies, component specialists and MRO environments.

Because laser cleaning isn’t simply about making something look clean.

It’s about controlled surface preparation and inspection — removing what needs to come off and creating a clean, accessible surface underneath.

When you’re dealing with aircraft, surface integrity matters.

✈️ Aircraft & aviation
🔧 Engineering & components
🎨 Paint & coating removal
🔎 Inspection preparation
🛠️ Restoration & refurbishment
⚙️ Aluminium & metal preparation

🚗 MK1 Golf Driver Restoration Begins

The restoration of our VW Golf Mk1 Driver is underway! 🔥

Today we’re starting the rust removal from the undercarriage, using laser cleaning to carefully strip away surface rust and contamination while preserving the original metal.

No blasting media. No harsh chemicals. Just precision laser cleaning. ⚡

Follow the restoration as we bring this classic back to life. 👀

Another satisfying clean-up completed at Lightwork 🔥

This time, we had a Honda cylinder cover that was previously painted red and needed stripping back ready for its next stage.

Using laser cleaning, we’ve removed the old coating and brought the surface back to a clean, prepared finish — ready for repainting.

No aggressive blasting. No harsh chemical stripping. Just controlled, precise surface preparation that gets into the detail without unnecessarily attacking the underlying metal.

Another great example of what laser cleaning can do for engine components, automotive restoration and refurbishment. 🛠️⚡

If you’ve got parts that need stripping, cleaning or preparing for restoration, give Lightwork a shout.
