It’s starting to feel official!

The sign is going up and the doors are open.

Moments like this matter.

From 'what if' chats over coffee (and cake), to keys in the door, to seeing our name up on the building.

This is something we’ve built together: with our friends, our family and even our kids!

Arcbuild Collective Ltd is properly open.

And if you fancy seeing what we’ve been up to, pop in and see us tomorrow at the soiree 4 til 6ish.

There’ll be coffee, cake, drinks and a droid. Possibly a chicken.

01/04/2026

BB13 here.

The office is ready.
You should come and see it.

Coffee. Cake. Drinks.
Good people. No speeches.

Everyone welcome — clients, friends, family, community.

Friday 3rd April.
4pm til 6pm (ish)
ArcBuild Collective HQ - 3a Clerk Street, Brechin

No hard hats required. Probably.

🔸️MEET THE TEAM...(chicken not included)🔸️

Hugh Dickson
Joiner | On Site

Every good build needs someone who understands how things come together. Properly. Carefully. With a bit of pride in every detail.

That’s Hugh.

He’s the one turning Calum's drawings into something you can actually stand in. The one making sure the finish is as considered as Gary's foundations. Steady hands, sharp eye, and the kind of experience you only get from years of doing the job right.

Hugh doesn’t shout about it. He just gets on with it. And somehow, everything ends up exactly as it should be.

On site, you’ll usually find him in well-worn work gear (those trousers have seen things).
But every now and then… he appears in a suit, out in the wild, and we’re all slightly taken aback.

Outside of work, with school-age kids, Hugh also runs a highly efficient (and completely unofficial) taxi service… early starts, late finishes, and a schedule that would rival any project programme.

He also appears to consume his body weight in sweets on a fairly regular basis. We’ve stopped questioning it. It seems to be working for him.

You’ll usually find him involved in football in some capacity… or, occasionally, explaining how he ended up with a chicken on his lap. (We didn’t ask too many questions. Sometimes, its best not to know)

Like the rest of us, he’s been part of this industry and this community for a long time.

And like all of us at Arcbuild, he cares about the people behind the projects just as much as the work itself.

Because good buildings matter.
But the way you build them matters more.

🔸️MEET THE TEAM.....(human team this time)🔸️

SHIRLEY-ANN TALBOT
Operations | Getting Things Done

Shirley-Ann keeps everything moving. Not always in a straight line… but always in the end.

From first conversations to final details, she connects people, works things through, makes sure ideas turn into action, and that everything and everyone gets paid on time.

Practical, instinctive, and very good at figuring things out (usually with a double strength tea in hand) and, unofficially, keeping the boys in check.

Big fan of a list.
Even bigger fan of rewriting that list halfway through.

If you’re coming in for a chat, she’ll be the one with the kettle on, the scrap paper out, and a plan starting to take shape.

She runs on tea and cheese, is known (somewhat annoyingly) to drop Taylor Swift lyrics and "Friends" quotes into conversationn, and is powered by a VERY patient family behind the scenes......

Also known as Tipsy Charlie outside of office hours…and is quietly pleased how the skills required to run cocktail-fuelled hen party events have transferred so well to ArcBuild.

Star Wars fan. Proud "owner" of a BB-8 droid (BB13), who she has now recruited as her office assistant. No-one actually signed off on this, but she's in charge of HR...so we will see how that pans out.

Gets the stuff done. Takes her work seriously, but not herself.

🔸️MEET THE TEAM (…apparently)🔸️

We’d like to introduce the newest addition to the Arcbuild Collective.

This is BB13.

His recruitment was made following what we believe was a late-night WhatsApp conversation. No one has been able to confirm who actually authorised this, if even at all.

His role within the company remains… unclear.

So far, he has:
• patrolled the corridor with purpose
• attended at least one meeting (uninvited)
• boosted general morale (maybe)
• caused mild concern for Calum (definitely)

He reports directly to Shirley-Ann, which feels like something we’ll all just have to accept.

We’re told he was constructed by Shirley-Ann's daughter Rachel, at Disney’s Droid Depot, which suggests a strong foundation in engineering… or at the very least, enthusiasm.

At present, we are monitoring the situation.

Calum has confirmed BB13 can stay…as long as he doesn’t annoy him.

No one is entirely confident this condition will be met.

Welcome to the team, BB13.

🔸️MEET THE TEAM: CALUM MCLEISH🔸️
Architectural Technician | Designer of dreams

Calum is the design brain behind the collective — turning ideas into thoughtful, detailed designs that actually work in the real world.

A stickler for detail, he has a sharp eye for how things come together, from early sketches right through to the finished space. He also has a talent for navigating the planning process… and persuading it to go his way.

He drew up the plans for the original office layout long before ArcBuild existed - proof that some things were always heading in this direction.

Calum loves a good before-and-after photo, a well-earned mini break in the sun, and has (by choice) walked Hadrian’s Wall.

Also a keen golfer, with ongoing plans to build a golf simulator in his garden… which may or may not happen before the next project deadline..........

This living room? Technically… a prequel.

Before there was a name, before there was a logo, before we were calling ourselves The Arcbuild Collective like grown-ups…

There was this.

Doodled by Shirley-Ann
Designed by Calum
Built by Hugh & Gary
Stone restored - by hand as he likes to remind us - by Gary

And somewhere between the stone, the graft, and the “one more tweak”…this happened.

Turns out…we were a collective long before we called ourselves one.

Not just buildings. Spaces where life happens.

**edited to add - in the spirit of transparency!

These photos have been edited by AI - but only to remove the people who were in the original photos.

🔶 MEET THE TEAM: GARY MORRISON 🔶
Building | On Site

Some people talk about building.
Gary just… builds.

This week he’s been out restoring roofs, shaping chimneys, and bringing tired stonework back to life. It's the kind of work that doesn’t shout, but stands the test of time.

Gary is the quietly spoken backbone of what we do on site.

Steady hands. Sharp eye. No fuss. Just proper graft done right.

If something needs built, fixed, or brought back to life - he’s your man.

He’s also got a serious love for trainers.
(no, we don’t know how many. no, we’re not asking again)

And yes. The sea lion.

We are currently introducing the team using whatever photos we can find. This, apparently, was the best available image of Gary....

With a sea lion.

Which feels… well, about right.

Good work. Solid foundations. Mild resistance to photography.

That’s Gary.

A New Company. A New Name. Familiar Faces.

After more than 40 years of JW Souttar Ltd serving the community, the time came for the business to close following Jack's retirement.

But for four of us who worked there, it never felt like the end.

We’d built our careers there. Learned our standards there. Built friendships there.

So when the doors closed, we made a decision: not to walk away, but to start again.

We invested our own money, raised capital, and created something new:

ArcBuild Collective Ltd

Same faces.
Same standards.
(A refurbished office!)
A new chapter.

This is just the beginning of our story.

Arcbuild Collective Ltd is an employee-owned co-operative of architectural technicians, designers, builders and craftspeople based in Brechin, Angus. We design and build thoughtful, well-made spaces by bringing architectural thinking and practical building experience together from the very start.

We are all former employees of JW Souttar, a respected family-run business that served the local area for over forty years. That shared background shaped our standards, our work ethic, and our belief in doing things properly. It also taught us the value of steady work, long-term relationships, and supporting families and communities through what we build.

As a co-operative, every member has a stake in the business and a voice in how it is run. We work collaboratively, take collective responsibility for our decisions, and focus on creating lasting value rather than short-term gain.

Arcbuild Collective Ltd is rooted in Angus and committed to design and build that is clear, considered, and made to last.

We believe the best projects come from open conversation. If you’re thinking about a project, or just want to talk through an idea, you’re very welcome to come in for a chat. We’ve always got locally roasted coffee on the go, and there’s quite often cake too.......

There will be a comfy seat waiting for you from Monday 23rd March. We can't wait to welcome you in.

Something new is being built.

Not just houses. Not just timber frames, foundations, or rooflines.

But spaces where birthday candles get blown out, first steps are taken, teenagers stomp up the stairs in a huff, and grandparents sit with a cup of tea by the window.

ArcBuild Collective Ltd is coming soon.

We’re a group of local tradesmen, designers and problem-solvers who believe the places we build should put people first. Families first.
Communities first.

ArcBuild is a true collective - we're employee owned and run. It's built by people from this community, for people in this community.

Our goal is simple: to create thoughtful, well-made homes and spaces that work for real life. The messy, noisy, joyful kind.

We’re excited to share more with you soon.
