This wasn't a job we took on, it was a job to keep two of our lads in work while I had a fortnight off. We often do work for rival companies who call us in if they are busy or simply because they cannot get staff. For whatever reason they call us they know the job will be spot on.
Anyone remember Raymond and Angie Shaw from Hull? Apparently they were so unpopular they were run out of Hull. We had never heard of them until they asked us to erect a garden fence. Now we understand why they are so hated.
Raymond and Angie Shaw
7 Mill Lane
South Ferriby
DN18
After a sob story and an introduction from people we trust, I lent Ray Shaw two of my lads who worked their t**s off to erect the fence in the photo's. The posts are spot on in line where the bloke wanted em and everything is spirit level perfect. The two lads who did all the work were 16 and 17 years old working as labourers for Ray and Angie Shaw during the college holidays. After a fortnight and a promise to pay them 50 quid each per day these lads removed 73 deep rooted shrubs and disposed, removed and disposed of the old fence and erected the new one using Mister Shaw's specific instructions where the posts were to go. I lent my lads a rotavator, petrol bush cutter, petrol chainsaw, petrol hedge cutters and assorted hand tools, total value 1500 quid.
After finding he had ordered the lads to cement post in with a four inch gap between the rear fence and side fences I went to speak with Mr Shaw who, in my opinion, was attempting to nab a few inches of garden from either side, leaving my lads to face the neighbours. When I checked the deeds for the boundary, it appeared Mr Shaw had dammed a flood drain. When this was mentioned Mister Shaw advised us he was well aware of what he was doing and that he knew the law. He went on to explain that the two young lads who had worked for him for a fortnight had not got anything in writing from him and they were under age to sue him. I checked. he's right. Then he explained that he had popped my 1500 quid's worth of tools in his garage and he wanted me off the premises......right now. So we waited while he called the police to remove us because we wern't walking away, with my lads unpaid and no tools. No way. After 20 minutes on the phone to the police, Ray Shaw was ordered by a police officer to return our tools or face arrest. We got the tools back but the two lads who been hu***ng tonnes of soil and nine foot posts about for a fortnight were owed 700 quid each with nowt they could do.
In the meantime, the deeds for Raymond Shaw house are shown, anyone has the right to go in his rear garden and inspect the drainage channel. Mr Shaw hates folk doing it but he does not have the right to stop anyone. In the meantime, some houses in South Ferriby may well be at an increased chance of flooding due to Mr Shaw's actions. If you feel you may be affected call the council and they will ensure it's put right if it need doing so.
There is a foot gap behind the recently erected rear fence and the same height fence to the rear of the property backing onto 7 Mill Lane. By enclosing the gap between the fences, Ray Shaw has deliberately blocked access to a drainage channel that requires to be kept monitered and clear. In addition he had the lads tip a large quantiy of cement in the gap in the knowlege the lower lying houses would be at increased risk. This is in direct violation with easements shown on the deeds to the property. Ray Shaw has bought the house very cheaply because of these easements and is adament it is his garden. The neighbour behind number 7 had voiced concerns about the drainage ditch when the house was purchased which has caused a hostile reaction from Ray Shaw who is now bloody minded and is out to flood his neighbour. Sadly, he will flood others too.
