I’m sick of hearing people say, “But they’re from a council estate.”
The stigma is shocking.
Please stop writing young people off because of where they grew up. Give them a chance, and you might find they become some of the best workers you’ll ever employ.
I grew up on a council estate, and some of the best years of my life were spent there.
Throughout my life, I’ve had to prove people wrong. From the parents of other children at school, to teachers who treated you differently because of where you came from, the assumptions were always there.
At 16, someone gave me a chance. I was accepted onto a plumbing apprenticeship and got a job with a plumbing and air conditioning company.
I’ve never looked back.
I only worked for two companies before setting up my own business in 2019. Today, I have a fleet of vans and a team of employees.
I bought my first house at 20. I now own more properties and became a landlord.
Most importantly, I have two beautiful children, a loving wife, and a life I’m incredibly grateful for.
All I ask is this: before you judge a young person because they come from a council estate, stop and think. They could become a huge asset to your company, your community, and society as a whole.
Potential isn’t determined by your postcode.
